MLB Baseball Betting Odds - Detroit at N.Y. Yankees
By Charles Jay
BetUS MLB baseball betting odds: N.Y. Yankees -135, Detroit +115, Total 11 (Under -120, Over - Even)
The New York Yankees (14-13), coming off a couple of wins against Cleveland, will try to keep some momentum going when they play host to the Detroit Tigers (11-15) in American League action that is set to get underway at 7:05 PM ET at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
Veteran southpaw Kenny Rogers (1-3, 7.66 ERA) will get the start for the Tigers, while young right-hander Phil Hughes (0-3, 7.86 ERA) receives the starting assignment for the Yankees.
At BetUS Sportsbook, New York is listed as a -135 favorite (Detroit is +115), with a total of 11 runs (the Under is -120, while the Over is even money).
Here are some of the MLB Baseball betting trends as they relate to this matchup:
(NOTE: These trends may also revert back to the 2007 season)
* DET has own five of its last seven games
* DET has lost six of its last ten road games
* DET has played its last three road games UNDER the total
* NY has won five of its last eight games
* NY has played six of its last ten games UNDER the total
* NY has played seven of its last nine home games UNDER the total
In the HEAD-TO-HEAD MLB betting trends:
* DET has won three of the last four meetings
* NY has won the last three meetings as the home team
* NY has won five of the last seven meetings as the home team
The jury is still out as to whether Kenny Rogers has truly rebounded from the elbow and shoulder ailments that plagued him last year. He's been shelled pretty badly in two of his last three starts, and looms as a question mark as the season progresses.
But when you talk about question marks, you're talking about Phil Hughes. One of a trio of pitchers who was highly touted as the future of the New York pitching staff (along with Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy) coming into 2008, he is clearly far from a finished product - up-and-down last year with a 4.46 ERA, which makes him not unlike a lot of pitchers, and he can't seem to get anyone out this season, with the opposition hitting .342 with a .416 on-base percentage.
The Yankees have suffered from inconsistency on offense, with Robinson Cano hitting under .200, little hurts bothering Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, and Jorge Posada now on the disabled list, leaving Jose Molina as the starting catcher. Detroit, which looked like it was anemic offensively at the season's start, as it was swept over three games by the Royals, has mounted an offensive comeback, now averaging five runs a game, ranking sixth in the majors in runs scored, and third in walks.
Not that we can put our absolute trust in Kenny Rogers, but we trust him a bit more than we do the bewildered Hughes, who has let out a gusher on the mound for the Bronx Bombers. For the Yankees, it's "home sweet home," after 18 of their last 20 games were played on the road (they made way for the Pope's visit), but they're also road weary at the same time. We like the Tigers as the +115 underdog in the BetUS Major League Baseball betting odds.
JAY'S PLAY: DETROIT (+115)
