Horse Racing Odds: Padding Your Bankroll Friday October 12

National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers. Foul weather knocked the racing off the turf yesterday at Belmont Park and then racing was canceled entirely after the seventh race.

More rain was in the forecast last night, so the track could still be wet and it is likely we'll be off the grass again.

With that said, we will just head out to Keeneland for today's featured race of the day. We'll also play the late Pick 3 at Keeneland, and we have 20 horses listed as Live Longshots.

It could be a busy day.

KEE Race 9 Franklin County S. (5:15 et)

Analysis: #1 Salt Syn has won 4 of her last 5 starts and 5 of 7 in her career on grass. She steps up in class here, but is as sharp as she has ever been reclaimed by Kirby four back after he lost her back in '06. Worth a look if she is let go near the 8/1 ML.

#9 Charlie Papa makes her first start since May where she won the $50K Cool Air for her seventh straight win. The streak started in '04, racing just twice in '05 and once in '06. Only one published work on the morning tab and low profile barn is showing a 0 for 5 mark with horses coming back off a +180 day layoff.

#5 Stylish Wildcat has not missed landing in the exacta on turf in her career (7-4-3-0). Returns off nearly a three month break for Sadler barn that is 20% winners with horses coming back off a 61-180 day layoff.

#7 Smokeyjonessutton, #9 Ravel

#7 Smokeyjonessutton came up short late in third place finish at Presque Isle over the Tapeta surface going a mile. The winner of the race was J.P.'s Big Boy, who came back to win a $125K restricted stake at Great Lakes Downs in his next outing on 10/6 and is 4 for 6 in his career.

#9 Ravel makes his first start since popping a 104 Beyer winning the G3 Sham in February at Santa Anita (pre-poly). Decent works on the morning tab for barn that is 24% winners with horses coming back off a +180 day layoff. Will have to settle for a very short price to back him.

KEE Race 10 Clm $50,000 (5:45 et)

#10 Tempo Five, #1 Slate, #9 Greeley's Angel, #8 My Best Pal Red

#10 Tempo Five is 2 for 2 in his career, beating $25K non winners of two last out at Presque Isle, a race that has produced a pair of next out winners. He was claimed out of the race by Amoss barn that is 22% winners first off the claim. The extra furlong here should suit and he looks promising enough to win right back.

#1 Slate was a good second last out, unable to catch the winner who drew clear in the stretch. Was caught in tight quarters behind the eventual winner heading into the first turn. He has done some of best running on poly and his 8/1 ML looks fair enough.

Live Longshots:

These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
