Bet on Horse Racing - Padding Your Bankroll

National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers. Don't miss Wednesday's report where Michael will keep you up to date with track bias reports for the major circuits.

It is opening day at Oaklawn Park on Friday, and if the first card of the meeting is any indication, it is going to be a fun meet.

There is a great horse racing betting card on tap and plenty of longshots to be found.

Also be on the lookout for the next big three year old. The showcase race of the meeting is the Grade 2 Arkansas Derby. The last four winners were Curlin, Lawyer Ron, Afleet Alex, and Smarty Jones.

There are plenty of stakes for three year olds throughout the meeting. The first one is today’s feature:

Today's Featured Race of the Day:

OP Race 8 Dixieland S. (4:38 ct)

#4 Carson's Legacy 9/2

#3 Gold Coyote 7/5

#6 Yonegwa 9/5

#1 Ben and the Twin 6/1

Analysis: #4 Carson's Legacy cuts back to a sprint after dueling for the early lead and fading to finish fifth last out going a mile at Delta. His last two sprints have been rock solid, two back a good looking winner at Calder in the Birdonawire where he drew off to win by nearly seven lengths. Barn is 22% winners moving runners from route to sprint.

#3 Gold Coyote also did not fire his best last out when stretched out. The gelding tired to finish fifth in the G3 Arl. Washington Futurity. Posted big numbers two and three back at Lone Star but not sure he really beat much in those two starts. Good works on the morning tab for Calhoun barn that is 17% winners with horses coming back off a +90 day break.

Wagering

WIN: #4 to win at 3/1 or better.

EX: 3,4 / 3,4,6

TRI: 4 / 1,3,6 / 1,3,6

Aqueduct Late Pick 3

Starting in Race 7: $1: 6,7,8 / 1,4,6 / 1,4,5 = $27

AQU Race 7 OClm $25,000N2X (3:20 et)

#8 Visual Candy, #7 Docstar, #6 Papa's Kara

#8 Visual Candy is coming off a good second last out at today's condition behind Gattinara, who got clear in the stretch and then returned to finish a good second against open Alw-1 optional claimers in her next outing here on 1/9. Two back our top pick ran a good third in a highly graded race that produced a pair of next out winners. The Them There Eyes won the $75K Scoot in her next start on 11/9. She has a win on the inner and missed wining the East View Stakes over the surface in '06 by a head and a nose.

#7 Docstar stumbled and jumped the jock last out when coming back off a two month break. Two back at Finger Lakes this gal won a state bred allowance race for non winners of three. The lone runner in the field with more than a pair of career wins. Worth tossing in the mix here at a generous price.

AQU Race 8 OClm $50,000N2X (3:49 et)

#6 Zippy Missy, #1 Mutakaway / #1a Sky Island, #4 Rite Moment

#6 Zippy Missy chased the early pace from the rail and weakened in the stretch to finish fourth last out, beaten 3 3/4 lengths for the top spot by a gate to wire winner over a speed favoring racing strip. Mare makes her third start of her current form cycle for red hot Asmussen barn. Mare owns a solid pace profile throughout.

#1 Mutakaway makes her first start since a runner up finish against $40K foes in the mud in November. The winner of the race was Croesus, who beat Alw-2 optional claimers in her next outing on 1/4. Makes her first start for Tony D. barn that is 31% winners (with a +ROI) first off the claim.

AQU Race 9 Md Sp Wt (4:18 et)

#5 She's My Sunshine, #1 Hatta Diamond / #1a Mattie Just, #4 Battingstar

#5 She's My Sunshine tracked the early pace but could not get to the gate to wire winner, who was taking advantage of a strong inside speed bias, a day seven runners went gate to wire. Filly is by Touch Gold out of a stakes placed mare that has dropped seven other foals to race, four winners. Should get a good tracking trip from just off the pace and has good sustained and late pace numbers.

#1a Mattie Just makes her first start since May for McLaughlin barn that is 18% winners with horses coming back off a +180 day layoff. This gal is a half to three stakes winners including Big Bambu ($456K). Entry mate #1 Hatta Diamond also has Ramon listed to ride so only one will go. She was sent off at 4/1 in her debut and checked in fifth. Barn hits at a 30% clip (with a +ROI) with second timers.

Live Longshots:

These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
