Horse Racing Odds - Padding Your Bankroll
By Michael Dempsey
National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and he will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers.
We head out to the Big A today in our never ending attempt to pad our bankroll. Today’s late Pick 3 has some possibilities, with a couple of generous prices bringing up the final leg of the horse racing wager, which will be a $24 investment today.
Our top pick in today’s featured race is a recent maiden winner who appears to be heading in the right direction, and may end up going off at a decent price:
Today's Featured Race of the Day:
AQU Race 8 Alw $46,000N1X (4:25 et)
#5 Fire Marshal 6/1
#2 Megapixel 5/2
#3 Please Impress 3/1
#4 Hussonfirst 9/2
Analysis: #5 Fire Marshal faces winners for the first time here after breaking his maiden in his fourth career start last out. Dueled for the early pace and finished gamely to prevail by 3/4 of a length. Two back our top pick ran second behind King David, who came back to beat Alw-1 state breds in his next outing on 2/24. Owns a solid pace profile throughout with the edge in early and sustained pace numbers. Gelding is on the improve and has enough pedigree to handle a wet track if we get it.
#2 Megapixel dueled for the early lead from the outside and drew clear late to break his maiden in his third career start. Earned the top last out speed fig in the effort. Elliott off to ride for Asmussen but Martin picks up suitable replacement in Ramon.
Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 7/2 or better.
EX: 2,5 / 2,3,4,5
TRI: 2,5 / 2,3,4,5 / 1,2,3,4,5
Aqueduct Late Pick 3
Starting in Race 7: $1: 7,8,9 / 2,5 / 1,3,7,10 = $24
AQU Race 7 Clm $20,000N1Y (3:55 et)
#8 Carolina Fuego, #7 Too Tired Tonight, #9 Brown Eyed Belle
#8 Carolina Fuego chased the early pace setter and ducked out in the stretch, finishing second behind the loose on the lead gate to wire winner over an inside speed favoring racing strip. Ran into repeat winners two and three back versus tougher.
#7 Too Tired Tonight cuts back from a mile where the filly made mild late run but could not catch the winner Cherokee Probe, who had opened up a six length lead heading for home. Makes her third start of her current form cycle and she figures to move forward of the track comes up wet.
AQU Race 8 Alw $46,000N1X (4:25 et)
#5 Fire Marshal, #2 Megapixel
(for analysis see today’s featured race)
AQU Race 9 Md $15,000 (4:55 et)
#10 Pay the Judge, #7 Proud Yankee, #1 Noteventheshadow, #3 Uhatemecuzuaintme
#10 Pay the Judge was not a threat last out against $25K maiden claimers and drops both in price and now in with state breds. Two of his three starts have come in open maiden claiming company. His try against NY breds two back found him on the lead before tiring to finish fourth. Draws a tough post but has enough tactical speed he may not get hung out wide going into the first turn. Catches a weak looking group here and his 12/1 ML looks fair enough to give him a look.
#7 Proud Yankee raced wide throughout last out in his first go around two turns and did it over a inner surface that was more favorable to inside speed. Drops into a softer spot for Tony D. barn. Gelding has two sibs to race, both winners, top earner Queen Isabel ($109K).
Live Longshots:
These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
AQU R2: #4 Fast Million 12/1
AQU R5: #4 Luke’s Flash 12/1
AQU R6: #4 Double Colico 10/1
AQU R7: #5 Suzee Sunrise 8/1
AQU R9 #10 Pay the Judge 12/1
AQU R9: #3 Uhatemecuzuaintme 10/1
