Horse Racing Odds - Padding Your Bankroll - Friday Racing

National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and he will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers.

A snowstorm is forecast to hit the Hot Springs area, so I am guessing we might be out of luck as far as racing at Oaklawn Park goes for Friday.

I could find enough of action at Aqueduct to keep us busy. We’ll invest $24 in the late Pick 3 and today’s featured race could produce a mild upset that would certainly pad our bankroll.

Analysis: #9 Sister Desiree was shuffled back early on, went down the rail to save ground and after making a mild bid around the far turn ran out of gas in the stretch, checking in a well beaten sixth. Two back was a sharp winner against Alw-2 foes at Philly. Drops into a easier spot here exiting an Alw-3 race and filly has potent connections in her corner with Levine/Moss. She is better than she showed last out and the 8/1 ML looks more than fair.

#5 Conja tracked the early pace and went on to beat Alw-2 optional claimers last out under a hand ride at Laurel. Filly looks well spotted here tagged for a $35K tag off nearly a two month break for Tony D. barn. After back to back wins, have to wonder why sharp barn is tangling this gal up for sale though.

#7 Of All Times, #9 Starhumor, #3 Precise Action

#7 Of All Times set the early fractions and after opening up a clear lead in the stretch was caught and had to settle for the runner up spot, beaten a length for the top spot while 3 1/4 clear of the rest of the field. He won at this condition four back and now makes his second start off the claim by Contessa. Owns the edge in early and mid pace numbers and may prove tough to catch in this spot.

#9 Starhumor was bumped coming out of the gate and chased the early pace, unable to make up much ground late over an inside speed favoring racing strip. Gelding makes his third start of his current form cycle here for Levine. The gelding, who has landed in the money in 8 of his 10 starts, fits well in this spot.

AQU Race 9 Md Sp Wt (4:55 et)

#6 January Gent, #10 Conquer the Fear, #4 Grand Treasure, #3 Golden Amulet

#6 January Gent finds what appears to be a soft spot for his debut here for Ward barn that is 30% winners with first time starters. $32K Ocala purchase is by Wiseman's Ferry (6% winners with debut runners from a limited sampling) out of a Carson City mare that has dropped one other foal to race, 0 for 19 Direct One ($3K). Good works on the morning tab and this gelding catches a field here that has not produced a speed fig that exceeds par for this class.

#10 Conquer the Fear was bumped and pinched back coming out of the gate and pressed the early pace, tiring inside the 1/8 pole to finish third. The runner up in that race was Alberti, a next out grad against $25K maiden claimers on 2/15. Steps up in class but this is not a tough looking group.

Live Longshots:

These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
