Horse Racing Free Picks - Padding Your Bankroll

National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and he will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers.

After a short break to celebrate Easter, we are back with another edition of Padding Our Bankroll.

Today’s Pick 3 Play comes from the Big A and has some promise. Three of my four selections in the final leg will likely end up going off at 10/1 or better.

Analysis: #8 Smokin' Spirit went gate to wire last out to beat $30K non winners of two in a sharp effort. Owns a good edge in early pace numbers and looks capable of taking this group gate to wire as well.

#9 Pike's Charm finished well last out for third in his first go off the claim by Hellman barn. Filly is heading in the right direction form wise and her 12/1 ML looks fair enough to toss her in the mix here.

#3 Golden Elegance, #2 Precious Too, #5 Abby Morgan

#3 Golden Elegance chased the early pace, took over the lead and finished gamely while unable to hold off the winner late, coming up a half length shy of the top spot while 6 1/2 clear of the rest of the field. Heading in the right direction form wise and this gal has a couple of seconds in two trips on wet tracks. She is quick enough to get the early lead in this spot.

#2 Precious Too had to stead at the start and then was sent up to open a clear lead and rolled over $15K non winners of two by seven lengths. The third and seventh place finishers in the horse race came back to win next out.

AQU Race 8 OClm $75,000N1X (4:25 et)

#5 Sebastian Cat, #3 Rodman

#5 Sebastian Cat tracked the early pace from the rail and had no punch in the stretch, checking in fourth and last in his first go against winners. Figures to be a decent price in this spot and gets a good jock switch from "No Go" to Garcia. Colt was a smart looking maiden winner two back and the runner up in that race was Magical Forest, who graduated in his next start and then won the $64K Spicy Award in his following outing.

#3 Rodman broke his maiden in his debut, drawing clear to win by five lengths. has enough pedigree to handle a wet track and the stretch out.

AQU Race 9 Md $15,000 (4:55 et)

#6 Lunaticonthegrass, #2 New York Met, #9 Ferdi's Prince, #8 Pay the Judge

#6 Lunaticonthegrass has been beaten double digit lengths in each of his five career starts but has run into dominate winners in most of his starts and he is showing some improve looking at his speed figs. This is just his second go at today's bottom level and he has a decent off track pedigree. We'll take a stab here at a large price in the nightcap.

#2 New York Met raced wide much of the trip in a third place finish last out catching an inside speed favoring racing strip. Back quickly with a week off and is back with state breds.

These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
