Horse Racing Betting - Young Studs
By Brian Mulligan
Any day now runners will appear in the past performances by sires that are debuting, first-crop sires, and clever horse racing bettors would be wise to try to get a leg up and project which of these young studs will excel early and often.
The Tiger Woods of the crop just may be Smarty Jones. This guy was a phenomenom on the racetrack.
He won his first 3 races by nearly 28 lengths combined and the day he peaked, the Kentucky Derby, backers got a fat 4-1 as he won by almost 3 lengths.
Speed was his game and that is a quality horse bettors looking to the future can count on. The son of Elusive Quality posted Beyer figures between 84 and 118 and in his only defeat, to Birdstone in the Belmont Stakes; he was 8 clear of the show horse.
Even though Smarty himself got a mile and a quarter, the feeling is that his offspring will be stamina challenged as they mature. Would still look for this guy to succeed at stud with middle distance runners and milers should be right up his alley.
Bettors should look for all of his runners to be very precocious.
On the other end of the spectrum, horseplayers should be careful before going with sons and daughters of Sarava early on.
He only won 2 stakes from 17 starts but one was the Belmont. He himself didn’t graduate till his fourth start and it was at 8 and a half furlongs.
Players should keep their hands in their pockets until Sarava’s offspring go at least a mile.
Speed will be heard from by the offspring of Safe in the U.S.A. By the speedball Gone West, out of Safely Kept, Safe took awhile to win but he was very consistent. He was on the cheap side, he never did win a stakes, but the winner of 5 of 16 starts could give you a sub :22 quarter at will and he will likely pass on that speed.
Horse bettors should know now that when the offspring of Sir Cherokee show up, they have to be patient.
Sir Cherokee was bred to be quick but he really didn’t improve until he went a route of ground.
Bettors should have no qualms about betting the offspring of Cherokee on any kind of surface. He himself graduated in the slop, he had 2 excuses for his only turf try, but the feeling is that bettors should give his runners a long look if they get a chance to turf.
Best with a target to run at, the runners from Cherokee Run figure to improve with more pace in the race.
One speed component that figures to come out of the blocks and a sire that horse bettors should jump on right away is Scrimshaw.
By BC Sprint hero Gulch, out of a Sham dam, Scrimshaw won at first asking at Santa Anita over 11 rivals and he figures to pass that speed on.
Look for his runners to be super precocious and that means look for them to win early and often.
Scrimshaw was not speed-crazy, he could stalk and still perform on his best day, and would look for that patient trait in his offspring.
Not many horses start and finish their careers with a win like Scrimshaw, and what that means is that his offspring figures to be sound and contentious every time.
When taking a shot with young studs, horse bettors have to try to project how good they will be before the crowd knows what happen to them.
