The Breeders Cup prep races are finished for this year, but that doesn’t mean that this weekend is a waste! This weekend, all horseplayers should be thinking of doing one thing - - padding that bankroll for the Breeders Cup Championships!

There are still a number of races this weekend at a number of Category A tracks for any true lover of thoroughbred racing to get action on!  Below are analysis and my personal betting line for some of this weekend’s stakes action!

Belmont Park

The Athenia – Grade III    $100,000   10/13/2007

If Pomme Frites shows up for this race, then expect her to go off the favorite.  My personal line is 3 to 1 on this mare only because it is difficult to wire any field on the grass.  Pomme could be facing Jade Queen, Meribel, and or J’Ray.  If that is the case, then this field will be very “salty”.  In other words, don’t take a low-priced favorite under any circumstances.  Look for a long-shot!  My personal betting line on either Jade Queen or Meribel in this race would be 2 to 1 which would make them too short of a price for you to bet on either one.

Personal Betting Line on Pomme Frites - - 3 to 1

Xtra Heat Stakes - $100,000   10/14/2007

A deep field figures to run this weekend in the Xtra Heat.  Pussycat Doll, Veneti, Swap Fliparoo, Somethingaboutbetty, Society Hostess, and Stylish Wildcat are all nominated for this race.  Pussycat Doll has disappointed at low odds in her last three races and maybe she just doesn’t want to race anymore.  Still, she won’t be facing anyone close to her talent level, save for Swap Fliparoo, and that means that if Doll shows up in this race think about wagering on her.  Make her odds 6 to 1 for a win wager.  Somethingaboutbetty, Swap Fliparoo, Society Hostess, and Veneti will all get my 4 to 1 wagering muscle bet in the sense that whoever goes off at higher than odds of 4 to 1 will be the gal I put my money on this Sunday.

Keeneland Racecourse

QEII – Grade I - $500,000   10/13/2007

There’s only one real name to remember in this race - - Dreaming of Anna.  Yes, she will be the chalk, but you will be hard-pressed to beat the chalk unless a horse named Valbenny from the West Coast comes out and runs against her.  The problem with beating Dreaming of Anna is that before Rags to Riches this was the best 3-year old filly in the country.  She’s pulled a NobizLikeShobiz in the sense that she is undefeated on the grass.  Her connections have no dreams of running Dreaming of Anna in either the Distaff or the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf.  That means that QEII is the big race for her.  Bet against her at your own risk!

Personal Betting Line on Dreaming of Anna - - 3 to 5

Perryville Stakes – Grade II - $200,000   10/13/2007

This is the one race this weekend where a true Breeders Cup contender could come out of.  That contender might be Le Grand Trois, Bobby Frankel’s tough thoroughbred from the East Coast.  He will, undoubtedly go off the favorite, but, like Dreaming of Anna in the QEII, there isn’t much chance of anybody else beating this guy.  Sure, Flashstorm is an okay horse, but he’s no Le Grand Trois.  However, there is one horse that could upset the Frankel apple cart and that horse is Monster Drive.  Should Monster Drive show up in this race on Saturday, make him the favorite on your personal betting line.  He will be on mine!  If Monster Drive doesn’t show up, and Le Grand Trois does, then it’s all over but the shouting.  Le Grand Trois will win this thing by about ten lengths.

Personal Betting Line on Monster Drive - - 8 to 5

Oak Tree at Santa Anita

Oak Tree Derby – Grade II - $150,000   10/13/2007

Not a whole lot to talk about with a short field in this race.  I like to look at a horse who has done well on the Santa Anita lawn before and who has not only a touch of class, but also has the guts to stay close to a wicked pace or come from the clouds if need be.  In other words, think about who has the best chance to use their tactical speed and isn’t afraid of going through traffic.  The two horses in this race are Ten A Penny and Unusual Suspect.  I expect neither horse to go off the favorite, but both have as good of a chance of winning this race as any other horse that’s likely to show up.  Give a longer look at Unusual Suspect as he will be ridden by Joe Talamo in this race.  Talamo is an excellent jock and has that strange ability of communicating with horses that Robert Redford tries to pull off in the movies.

Personal Betting Line on Ten A Penny - - 5 to 1

Harold C. Remser Sr. Handicap - $100,000  10/14/2007

This is going to be a dynamite race!  There are no less than four logical contenders in this race.  Be very careful about how you set your personal betting line in this one as all four have a truly legitimate shot to win this.  Like the Xtra Heat Stakes, I’m inclined to bet on the horse with the highest odds.  BetUS is very good at keeping the race open right up until the gates open during the race.  It’s amazing how they can do that when TVG can’t even do that!  In any case, study, study, study because this one is wide open!  My gut tells me that Missvinski, who is the obvious class of the race, should finally get it together, but who knows?  Super Freaky is also a very good horse and Supposition comes out of the Grade I American Oaks that produced Panty Raid.  Also, there’s Gotta Have Her who’s no slouch!  So, yes, this thing is wide open!
