Horse Racing: Padding Your Bankroll October 19

National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers. Don't miss Wednesday's report where Michael will keep you up to date with track bias reports for the major circuits.

We only had two of the three winners on our $24 Pick 3 ticket on Thursday. I failed to use Fort Prado on our ticket in the Woodford Stakes. He was my fourth choice and I only went two deep in that race.

Had we invested a few more bucks in our ticket we would have cashed for $209.70.

We won't be deterred, we'll come back with another $24 investment today, and I am looking for an even higher return on our investment.

Today's Featured Race of the Day:

BEL Race 8 Storm Flag Flying S. (4:40 et)

#1 Veneti 8/1

#4 Pussycat Doll 5/2

#2 Baby Bird 9/5

#5 Swap Fliparoo 9/2

Analysis: #1 Veneti came up short last out at the Spa against Alw-3 optional claimers, stuck down along a deep rail much of the trip in a fourth place finish. Earned a career top two back in neck loss in a restricted stake here in June. She will need to bounce back and likely will need to run a career top to get the top spot here. She flashed some promise last year and both of her starts at the Spa were sub par so a bounce back here at a price is in order.

#4 Pussycat Doll was off a step slow last out and weakened to finish third after being sent up to vie for the early lead. She is a multiple G1 winner and has topped the triple digit Beyer scale three times in her career.

Wagering

WIN: #1 to win at 9/2 or better.

EX: 1,4 / 1,2,4

TRI: 1,4 / 1,4 / 1,2,4,5

Keeneland Late Pick 3

The Play: Starting in Race 8: $1: 2,3,4,8 / 7,8,12 / 2,12 = $24

KEE Race 8 Alw $52,000N2L (4:45 et)

#2 El Poco Diablo, #4 Highest Degree, #8 Trying Brian, #3 Buddha Calling

#2 El Poco Diablo adds lasix for his third start of his current form cycle. Was no match for 7 1/4 length winner Ravalo last out, that runner coming back to beat Alw-3L foes in his next outing at Presque Isle on 9/24. Colt missed two back when coming back off a 14 month layoff by a head and a neck. In a capable barn and the 10/1 ML looks fair enough.

#4 Highest Degree was a good second last out here on 10/5 when coming back off nearly a six month layoff. McPeek's runners have been firing fresh in recent months and he hits at a good rate second off the bench as well, hitting at a 25% clip (with a +ROI) with horses making their second start off a 45-180 day layoff.

KEE Race 9 Valley View G3 (5:15 et)

#12 You Go West Girl, #8 Audacious Chloe, #7 Callwood Dancer

#12 You Go West Girl may have been to close to the pace last out in the G3 Pucker Up and weakened in the stretch to finish sixth. Three back in the G3 Regret the filly was farther back and finished better in runner up finish. Don't mind the jock switch to Leparoux who is more patient and with the outside draw she figures to be farther back here. Sharp barn and we should catch a decent price on this filly, who can win in this spot with her best.

#8 Audacious Chloe won three stakes in a row earlier this year including the Appalachian over the turf here at the spring meeting. Came up short as the fav last out when shipped to Woodbine and was in tough two back in the G1 American Oaks. Pletcher has a couple of good works into her since her last start and she fits well in this spot.

#7 Callwood Dancer gets a class test here but is coming off a career top beating Alw-2 optional claimers and appears to be on the upswing. Borel takes the call and likely this filly gets overlooked on the tote.

KEE Race 10 Clm $16,000 (5:45 et)

#12 Predatory Lender, #2 Bid Made

#12 Predatory Lender goes turf to poly here after setting the early fractions and weakening to finish fourth last out at

Remington against $15K foes. Calhoun's two wins at this meeting have both been with RP shippers. Barn does good worth with recent claims but this guy did not show much in her first few starts versus tougher for the barn and she appears to be heading back into a positive form cycle here.

#2 Bid Made came with a five wide run and came up just a nose shy of winning for this tag last out. The winner of the race was Ca Ching the Green, who returned to beat $10K starter allowance foes on yesterday's card.

Live Longshots:

These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
