Horse Race Betting: Padding Your Bankroll October 18
By Michael Dempsey
National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers. Don't miss Wednesday's report where Michael will keep you up to date with track bias reports for the major circuits.
Wednesday's feature produced a $6.40 winner, but we missed out on the exacta. I had all three winners listed in our Late Pick 3 play at Keeneland, but I failed to put them all together on our $24 ticket, so we came up short.
That hurt because the winners paid $20.80, $10.40, and $11.80 and the $1 Pick 3 returned $354.00.
Today's Featured Race of the Day:
BEL Race 8 Awad S. (4:40 et)
#1 Barastraight 6/1
#7 Encinas 5/1
#2 Prince Rahy 5/2
#4 Tricky Causeway 8/1
Analysis: #1 Barastraight adds blinkers here after coming up short in the stretch in fourth place finish against Alw-3 optional claimers. The four year old has some back class, a Group 3 winner but has not been able to recapture that form in three starts in the U.S. Not a real tough stake here and CVel sticks.
#7 Encinas makes his U.S. debut here for McLaughlin barn. His last start at Nad El Sheba was ugly but owns back efforts that look like they would put him in the mix here. Barn is 19% winners with horses coming back off a +180 day layoff.
Wagering
WIN: #1 to win at 3/1 or better.
EX: 1,7 / 1,2,4,7
TRI: 1,2,7 / 1,2,7 / 1,2,3,4,7
Keeneland Late Pick 3
The Play: Starting in Race 7: $1: 3,6,9 / 7,9 / 2,5,9,12 = $24
KEE Race 7 OClm $80,000N1Y (4:15 et)
#6 Reigning Court, #3 Santana Strings, #9 Jack Grant
#6 Reigning Court fits this condition nicely, having won a optional claimer three back where he was offered up for a tag and finishing a game second two back in stakes company. That second two back in the $65K Marfa was flattered when the winner Off Duty came back to win the G3 Phoenix in his next outing on 10/6.
#3 Santana Strings checked in third last out at Presque Isle, regressing off a career top earned two back in a good runner up finish in a $175K stake at the new Erie track. This guy has not seen the winners circle since taking the G2 Amsterdam back in '05 but looks like he fits here.
KEE Race 8 Woodford S. (4:45 et)
#7 T.D. Vance, #9 Raedonald
#7 T.D. Vance was my top pick in the Shadwell Mile and he let us down at 12/1. He is better suited to today's 5 1/2 furlongs and fact Motion brings him back quickly looks like his last start did not take much out of him. Won the Troy two back at today's D/S, and was a game second here last fall in this race, beaten just a half length for the top spot. Bounces back with a better effort here in this spot.
#9 Raedonald exits the Ky Cup Turf Dash at Ky Downs, checking in a non threatening fourth behind a couple of these. Was coming off a career top two back winning a starter handicap at Ellis. His numbers two and three back put him in the mix here and we should catch a generous price.
KEE Race 9 Clm $30,000N2L (5:15 et)
#3 No Fancy Title, #2 Thiscatcanscat, #12 Cat On the Line, #9 R Hallograeme
#3 No Fancy Title made a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot last out at Turfway off a four month layoff. It was his first go for sharp barn, who took him for $50K two back at Churchill. Figures to move forward off that effort.
#2 Thiscatcanscat dueled for the early lead, had the lead and hung, checking in third. The winner of the race was Brutal Attack, who came back to beat $32K foes in his next outing on 9/1.
Live Longshots:
These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in yourtrifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
