Horse Race Betting: Oceanport Options
by Brian Mulligan
A typing teacher named Charles E. Weller once used as a drill the words "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country", but for horse racing fans, now is the time to get down and dirty and try to get paid in the Breeders’ Cup at Monmouth Park and here are some suggestions to get paid.
Here goes in order of the way the races will unfold and as with most races at the shore, the ascent will be on speed.
The Filly and Mare Sprint gives the ladies a chance without facing the best speedballs in the game. In a statement against Patrick Biancone we’re tabbing Oprah Winney, a local winner who has been in the money in all but one race in 14 outs. And if the real Oprah shows up, she’ll steal the show. Logical players Dream Rush and outsider Wild Gams could be valuable.
The Juvenile Turf kicks off the grassy grab bag and the rains early in the week pushed the selection to Achill Island, who has been right there on soft courses. You don’t get an unbeaten very often at 8-1 but that’s the number Gio Ponti starts at and the sky is the limit for him. If you feel really giddy, 50-1 shot Cannonball is unbeaten in 2 starts on turf.
The Dirt Mile and Corinthian will be a handful, but maybe not from post 8. Pro Wanderin Boy has ducked nobody his entire career and will be prominent, but the bet however is the speed of the speed Gottcha Gold, who is peaking at the perfect time.
Let’s go on to Saturday and the baby girls. They will all have to collar Indian Blessing, an absolute blur of a horse who will dominate from an inside post. Blessing will be saying amen in the lane when she has 6 lengths to spare.
Like the NFL on most Sundays, this race is wide open. Tale of Ekati is agile and game, two great assets for this surface, but the bad news is he’s parked out in post 10, a horrible spot in Jersey. War Pass has made no mistakes so far, will be on his high horse early and is the one to beat. Kodiak Kowboy has only lost 2 races but less than 2 lengths combined.
The Key to the Filly and Mare Turf is named Nashoba’s. All she does is win races. Use her with game American Honey Ryder and the foreign contingent of Simply Perfect, All My Loving, and Lahudood.
Speed kills especially in the BC Sprint sometimes but Greg’s Gold had no room to move last time and will be a handful. He can nail the commanding speed with chalk Midnight Lute right behind him.
Excellent Art will try to save the day for Aidan O’Brien in the Mile but he will wilt under the pressure of longshot Jeremy, who is trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who handled legend Shergar, BC winners, Pilsudski, Kalanski and a host of other stars. The colt is handily drawn in post 5 and moves to Frankie Dettori, arguably the best rider in the world. After Market was left with too much to do last time and looms a legit late factor.
Balance just might not stagger this time in the Distaff. She lost all chance at the start recently and is a Grade 1 winner on her best day. Give Ginger Punch her respect in all the slots.
The Euros in the Turf are not quite as strong this year but they will still dominate as Dylan Thomas can snap the Arc/Turf drought. Use with fellow Euros Red Rocks, Champs Elysees, Grand Couturier and then put in America’s best shot English Channel.
Longshot players in the Classic have to hope for an unusual thing to happen because the top guns have been stellar all year. Basically, only 5 horses can win the Classic on paper, but they don’t run them on paper. Street Sense will swoop and cash and nail Haskell hero Any Given Saturday at the wire with Curlin completing the trifecta ahead of Hard Spun and the projected rank runner Lawyer Ron.
If you win, it’s champagne. But even if you lose, a good Jersey pizza, some Springsteen songs, and a brew will do. Good luck.
