Horse Betting - Padding Your Bankroll 47
By Michael Dempsey
National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers. Don't miss Wednesday's report where Michael will keep you up to date with track bias reports for the major circuits.
Our $16 Pick 3 investment on Wednesday crashed and burned after the first leg - not exactly a good way to start the week.
Things look more promising today, and we’ll invest a modest $24 in our Late Pick 3 play and we have plenty of longshots to keep an eye on today on a good betting card at Belmont Park.
Today's Featured Race of the Day
BEL Race 8 Alw $49,000N1X (4:40 et)
#3 Zip to the City 3/1
#9 Haze My Man 5/1
#5 Striking Rizzi 7/2
#2 Gulch Fever 15/1
Analysis: #3 Zip to the City made a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot last out going 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass when coming back off a 10 month layoff. The gelding graduated two back on the main track in what was his first start for Dutrow off the claim. The City Zips have run much better on grass than I thought they would and this guy should be tighter second off the bench for a barn that is 23% winners with horses making their second start off a +180 day layoff.
#9 Haze My Man set the early pace and held on for second last out against $30K claimers in NJ, but he was beaten by a length for the top spot. The gelding is back in with state breds here and does have a win and a couple of seconds over the Belmont turf in seven career starts.
Wager: #3 to win at 2/1 or better. Exacta key of #3,#9 over #2,#3,#5,#9.
Belmont Park Late Pick 3
The Play: Starting in R7: $1: 4,8 / 3,5,9 / 2,8,9,10 = $24
BEL Race 7 Clm $35,000N3L (4:08 et)
#8 Pegase Jem, #4 Straight Romance
#8 Pegase Jem was bumped soon after the start and finished evenly for third last out, beaten by two lengths for the top spot. His last pair of speed figs are a good fit here.
#4 Straight Romance drew a tough post last out going a route of ground at the Spa, checking in sixth. The runner up and fifth place finisher in the race came back to win next out. Two back was a sharp winner going six furlongs on the grass here against $35K non-winners of two. The gelding is reunited with CVel who was aboard for both of his career wins.

#3 Zip to the City, #9 Haze My Man, #5 Striking Rizzi
(For analysis see above)
BEL Race 9 Md Sp Wt (5:12 et)
#10 Westside Willy, #8 Marseillaise, #2 Chief Tashmo, #9 Sky Dragon
#10 Westside Willy makes his first start since last November for Weaver barn that is 19% winners with horses coming back off a +180 day layoff. He put in decent efforts in two turf tries last year, a third in his debut and a fourth in his third career start. Finds what looks like a soft spot here for his return and CVel takes the call.
#8 Marseillaise debuts for the Bush barn that is 10% winners with first time starters. The gelding is by Royal Anthem (9% first turf) out of an Ends Well mare that has dropped four foals to race - three winners including a pair of turf winners: Finlandia ($326K) and Banrock ($141K). The gelding has a steady string of works and the barn is always worth a look in NY bred races.
Live Longshots:
These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or, if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
