NFL Betting – Cowboys to Stuff Lions
By Russell Edward
Last Thursday’s big win over the at-the-time 10-1 Green Bay Packers gave the Dallas Cowboys just the leg up they need to control their fate heading in the final stretch of the season. The only things they can now do to better their position are to stay on top and get home field advantage through the NFC playoffs and take out one of Tom Brady’s knees. As for Detroit, well, they are pulling another Lions special by falling apart after a promising start. The Lions finish every NFL betting season weak, it seems, but their great (6-2) start to the season makes this year particularly painful for their fans.
Dallas Cowboys –13 at Detroit Lions +13
Not only do the Lions have to watch out for the potent rushing attack of Marion Barber and Julius Jones, but Dallas quarterback Tony Romo is just as dangerous on the ground as he is through the air, especially when flushed out of the pocket. All three of them can change the game with a big play on any given down. To improve the chances for each of them, the Dallas offense will run mostly to the outside in order to help avoid Detroit’s inside specialist, Shaun Rogers and Cory Redding. The Cowboys are particularly well-suited for this type of play, as their two tight ends can block as well as they can catch and run when put in motion.
Romo’s passing game is not only helped by the fact that the Cowboys running game must always demand respect, by also by the fact that his receivers are among the most gifted in the game, especially his favorite target, Terrell Owens. It should come as no surprise that many fantasy team owners are drooling at the prospects of Romo and Owens going up against the very poor pass defense of the Lions secondary this weekend. The one aspect of the Lions passing defense that is good – the takeaway department – relies on mistakes that the Cowboys don’t usually make. Still, one or two turnovers in favor of the Lions will be enough to keep them within a couple of touchdowns and help them cover this large football betting spread.
