NFL Betting Futures – What if…Green Bay Made Superbowl?
By Tim Furious
Green Bay Packers vs. New England Patriots
Sunday, February 3rd – University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale --- 4:30pm EST
Opening NFL Betting Future: New England -9.5
Out of any single team in the league, Green Bay stands the best chance to beat the Patriots in the Superbowl. They boast a solid rushing game, led by Ryan Grant from Notre Dame, averaging 99.8 yards per game. As per usual in Green Bay, the running game opens up the passing lanes for Brett Favre’s canon. Green Bay’s penchant for running the score in the past weeks means that they can keep up with the Patriots on the scoreboard.
The oddsmakers assume that Favre and Jennings can run up the score in Phoenix, especially after they posted a whopping 42 points in a blizzard at Lambeau during divisional weekend. Brett’s “never say die “attitude, accompanied with the idea that the refs will be somewhat pulling in favor of Brett, means that the Packers have a punchers chance against New England.
Of course, you can never count out Brady and Moss in any game. But the forthcoming of Al Harris and Charles Woodson in the secondary means that the receiving corps can be contained to a certain degree. The problem for the Packers will be matching someone up against tight-end Benjamin Watson. Atari Bigby, the hard hitting cover man, has gotten blown up by tight ends all season. Watson would be the x-factor in this game and the reason the betting faithful can keep the faith on New England’s side for the win. But if this matchup does happen, there are a lot of reasons to take the points.

San Diego Chargers vs. Green Bay Packers
Sunday, February 3rd – University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale --- 4:30pm EST
Opening NFL Betting Future: Green Bay -3.5
The Chargers would enter this matchup as supposed underdogs, despite a would-be victory over the Patriots. San Diego matches up extremely well with the high octane offense of Green Bay with a feisty offense of their own. The key here is the health of Philip Rivers and LDT heading in to both the AFC Championship and the Superbowl.
Rivers, despite his zealous over confidence in recent weeks, is the biggest suspect of the four remaining quarterbacks to crumble in the face of the incredible pressure in the Superbowl. The Chargers average only 187.8 passing yards per game and would have to contend with the duo of Harris and Woodson containing Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers.
Antonio Gates’ health also remains a huge question mark. But the Packers don’t have a linebacker on the roster that is suitable to cover a playmaking line-backer like Gates. Bigby or A.J. Hawk would be given the dubious responsibility, but that is their only defensive weakness. With such a tight line, the Green Bay betting faithful have no reason Favre can continue his unquestionable magic this season en route to a Superbowl victory.
With San Diego’s victory over New England, the Chargers would move to an unfathomable 6-0 ATS in their past six. But quarterbacking would be the big question here. And the Packers dominate that matchup with Brett under center as opposed to the up-and-down Rivers.
