NFL Betting – NFC Championship Game – Green Bay Packers
By Russell Edward
At the start of the 2007 NFL betting season, no one, including Brett Favre – coming back for an 18th season behind center – thought that the Packers would be competitive enough to make it to the NFC Championship Game. All the media was talking about was how mad Favre had to be, and was, that his management team did not do enough to pursue Randy Moss and give Brett a go-to target downfield. The other thing everyone was saying was how the Packers would have to be a pass-first, pass-only offense, as they had no one at the running back position that would be able to carry a full time load effectively enough to relieve pressure on the passing game.
New York Giants +7 at Green Bay Packers –7: Total 40.5
Now, with the title game at home in Lambeau, there is time for some reflection on why preseason predictions are meaningless and why players should always keep their noses out of the team’s front office decisions.
With 4,155 yards passing this year, Brett threw for his third highest total yards in his long and illustrious career. The last time he threw for more yards was back in 1998. His 28 touchdowns this season were his most in four years. Favre threw for 15 interceptions this season as well. The last time he threw for less than 15 INTs in one season was way back in 1996, when he threw 13. He has never thrown less than 13 in a full season. Favre was sacked just 15 times all year, the second-lowest total of his 18-year Hall of Fame career. His passer rating of 95.7 was the third-highest rating of his career, and his highest since 1996. Pretty good numbers for an old man, as Randy Couture, one of the best MMA fighters ever – and one of Brett’s heroes - would say.
This is all not to even mention that the running game has found new life with Ryan Grant, picked up off waivers, ironically, from the New York Giants this past offseason. Grant gained almost 1,000 yards, despite only starting in seven games.
NFC Championship Game: Sunday, January 20 at 6:30 p.m. EST
There are few things as frightening to someone who likes to bet on NFL football odds than going against what appears to be destiny. The Packers are favored by seven points in the BetUS sportsbook for this huge game, and if destiny was ever to come into consideration, it would have to be considered to be heavily in favor of the Packers and their old man quarterback. If you like to bet on the Giants, you would be wise to keep in mind all that seemed to be against Favre and his team at the start of the year and where they stand right now: one game away from another Super Bowl try for Number 7.
