NFL Betting Odds: Busting The Myth of Undefeated and Winless Teams
By Tim Furious
After Dallas lost and New Orleans finally won, the two true titans of the NFL now stand undefeated with a Week 9 showdown circled on everyone’s calendars. Can the Patriots and the Colts challenge the 1972 Miami Dolphins esteemed undefeated record? And can the 2007 Miami Dolphins not go down in history for a winless season? Check out the BetUS.com NFL futures for some fun, and potentially profitable, football betting futures!
THE UNDEFEATED
New England Patriots (6-0 SU, 6-0 ATS)
The Patriots have been a bettor’s best friend this season. Not only are they undefeated, they love running up the score. Every team in the NFL should be pissed off at Eric Mangini for lighting the match under Bilichek’s tight ass. The Patriots continue to outscore their opponents by a whopping 23.0 points, making them impossible for oddsmakers to set a decent line against because nobody will take their opponents.
They face their division rival Miami this weekend, and play the Washington Redskins next weekend. After that they will face the Indianapolis Colts in a game that will ultimately decide which team will challenge the 1972 Miami Dolphins in 2007.
The Patriots have two MVP contenders, Randy Moss and Tom Brady. In the BetUS.com sportsbook futures the Pats are +500 to go undefeated. Parlayed with a bet for the Dolphins or Rams to go winless, the savvy betting investor could win big as the Patriots steamroll the NFL.
Next game: New England (-14) vs. Miami
Indianapolis Colts (5-0 SU, 3-2 ATS)
Standing in the Patriots way, however, are the Indianapolis Colts. While the Patriots have been blowing opponents out of the water, the Colts are still breaking out of the habit of playing down to their opponents skill level. Their two losses against the spread were to Tennessee and Houston, but they have since demolished the Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Since, they have only managed to outpace opponents by 15.2 points per game. Indianapolis ranks eleventh overall on defense, allowing 16.7 points per game. The Colts lack the defensive personnel to shutdown opponents the way the Pats do, which is a reason for their massive +1800 odds to go undefeated in our sportsbook futures.
Making life difficult for the Colts are Weeks 9 and 10, where they will face the New England Patriots and the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers, lest we forget, are the team that thwarted their undefeated hopes two season ago after Michael “The Burner” Turner broke off a game-clinching 83 yard touchdown. For those of you that have faith in the Colts ability to repeat as champs, lay your money where your big mouth is.
Their schedule may be enough to give you nightmares if you lay down a long-term bet on the Colts, but it will reap massive rewards if you put the money down, as opposed to putting it down if they beat the Pats in Week 9. Get on the wagon before everyone else does, if the Colts are your choice.
Next game: Indianapolis (-3) vs. Jacksonville
THE WINLESS
St. Louis Rams (0-6 SU, 1-5 ATS)
The Rams once boasted the “Greatest Show on Turf”. Now they have the worst offense in the league. They score 12.2 points per game and are getting gunned down by opponents in the process.
The Rams have the offensive weapons, as they showed against Arizona in Week 5 in a 31-34 loss, to torch the scoreboard, but their listless defense is embarrassing. Their schedule is fairly easy, with their meeting in Week 13 against the Falcons being one of the only games on their schedule they can win.
If Marc Bulger can return to connect with Torry Holt on an epic scale, the Rams have a chance to avoid going down in history as one of the worst teams in NFL history. The smart betting investor should look farther to the south (South Beach, to be more specific) for a smarter online bet.
Miami Dolphins (0-6 SU, 1-3-2ATS)
The Dolphins, sadly, have +1800 to go absolutely winless this season. And who can blame them? Their offensive line is made up of play-doh characters and everyone on the offense (outside of Ronnie Brown) is a second-stringer. The just traded Chris Chambers to the Chargers, leaving (gasp!) Marty Booker and Ted Ginn Jr. as their only receiving threats.
How fitting would it be for the Dolphins to go winless the year that their 1972 record is matched by either the Colts or the Patriots? It seems like fate, doesn’t it? With Cleo Lemon at the helm, Cam Cameron looking absolutely clueless, and the Fins offensive line being the worst in the league, it is not that far of a stretch to see these reeling Dolphins getting harpooned with a winless season.
