Football Betting Odds - NFL Regular Season Wins - AFC

When it comes to NFL betting and regular season win totals, like Lindsay Lohan's song Over or Evanescence's Going Under, there's only two ways to go. In the first of our eight division previews, we examine the NFL odds for regular season wins in the AFC South:

Houston Texans

The Texans won six games last season and were two last-second losses away from 8-8, yet they still gutted their offense.

The league-leader in completion percentage, David Carr, has been swapped out for a relatively unknown in Matt Schaub. The move will add some much-needed confidence.

In the backfield, the Texans acquired Ahman Green, who immediately becomes the most accomplished running back the franchise has ever seen. The Texans are still bereft of weapons in the passing game outside of Andre Johnson, which makes this offense fairly limited.

On defense, any success is contingent on the defensive line, which has underachieved for years. The Texans have spent first-round picks on defensive linemen in four consecutive seasons and need to start reaping the rewards because the secondary will need a lot of help this year.

NFL Odds For Regular Season Wins: 6.5

NFL Free Pick: Under

Indianapolis Colts

Here’s the bad news: Indianapolis has lost a running back, linebacker, cornerbacks and two defensive tackles from last year’s starting rotation.

Here’s the good news: they lost a player at each of those positions in the past two seasons and still did much more than survive.

The Colts offense will be strong and possibly as strong as ever. The Colts defense will be extremely weak, which means the Colts will have to score a lot to keep up.

The Colts defense won’t be much of an Achilles heel until the playoffs hit.

NFL Odds For Regular Season Wins: 10.5

NFL Free Pick: Over

Jacksonville Jaguars

A year removed from 12 wins, the Jags dropped to eight wins in 2006. But the Jaguars could be somewhat of a sleeper this year.

Their defense finished second overall in the rankings and that encompassed the fact that they lost Pro Bowl caliber starters Mike Peterson, Reggie Hayward and Donovin Darius for prolonged periods of time.

With all of them healthy again, they should be just as strong.

On offense, Byron Leftwich is in a contract year, which means he should finally prove that he is a starting caliber quarterback. There is a ton of competition at the wide receiver position, which should finally get the best out of first-round busts, Matt Jones and Reggie Williams.

The game plan will be to throw it deep and Leftwich seems comfortable in this offense – more than in any previous season. We know they can run it so don’t be surprised if they are a 10- or 11-win playoff team this year.

NFL Odds For Regular Season Wins: 9

NFL Free Pick: Over

Tennessee Titans

The Titans looked like they had zoomed through the rebuilding process last year but now all of the sudden have taken a large step backwards.

They still have Vince Young but virtually no quality receiving threats.

They lost Travis Henry (their starting running back) to free agency, but brought back Chris Brown, who they benched last year.

Young is an improviser but he’ll need some smoke and mirrors to get this team moving up and down the field.

On defense, the Titans lose playmaker Pacman Jones, which downgrades an already weak defense.

Young is also on the cover of Madden 2008, which doesn’t bode well if you are the superstitious type.
