Endzone NASCAR Betting Preview

The Sprint Cup series is poised to invade Georgia for some southern hospitality at nearly 200 mph and the NASCAR betting action will be at its finest. Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway marks race 4-of-36 on the Cup schedule.

Atlanta Motor Speedway is a big-time track that generates big-time speeds, big-time NASCAR wagering excitement and victories by big-name drivers. Of the 97 Sprint Cup races at the high-banked 1.5 miles tri-oval, 61 have been won by drivers who were either past or future champions of the series.

That's a 63 percent clip and those who bet on NASCAR may want to ride the trend. That impressive total includes a run of 11 consecutive victories by champions from 1995, through the first race of the 2000 season.

The defending champion of last year's Kobalt Tools 500 is Jimmie Johnson. Johnson won both of last season's Atlanta Motor Speedway events in rout to a series-best 10 wins. And, Johnson is the two-time defending series champion which supports the before mentioned trend.

BetUS NASCAR odds list Johnson among the favorites to win Sunday's race. None of the Hendrick drivers have found Victory Lane in 2008 after winning 18-of-36 last year. But that could change on Sunday if Johnson is on top of his game.

Jeff Gordon is also a Hendrick force capable of taking the checkers on Sunday. Gordon finished a respectable 12th in last year's Kobalt Tools 500 prior to a solid seventh-place in the fall race at Atlanta. He has four career wins here with 12 top-5 finishes and 19 top-10's.

Another driver earning oddsmakers and bettor's respect is Carl Edwards, who is coming off back-to-back victories. Edwards swept both races at Atlanta in 2005, proving he's a threat with good betting value. In addition to his two victories, Edwards has collected four top-5's and six top-10 finishes in his career at Atlanta.
