USA vs. France
Match Time: Friday April 11- Sunday April 13, 2008
Winston-Salem, USA
Analysis: It comes as no surprise that USA Team captain Patrick McEnroe returns to Davis Cup action this year with the same line-up – Andy Roddick, James Blake and the Bryan’s twins – that took USA to its 32nd Davis Cup victory last year. Even less surprising is Roddick’s nod to kick off the opening day of their quarterfinal tie against Michael Llodra of France, followed by James Blake vs. Paul-Henri Mathieu.
Andy Roddick has long been the USA Team leader and last year, he was impressive in their triumphant Davis Cup run last year. James Blake has been equally solid for the USA Team – even though he has played second fiddle to Roddick for the most part.
It is no understatement to say that much of USA’s hope rests on Roddick’s shoulders, however, in national team competitions such as this one, the dynamic cannot be compared to the tournaments players compete in throughout the year, and while, Roddick is looked upon to lead the team, the other members must deliver as well.
The USA Team has received a bit of a reprieve in the announcement that Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfired Tsonga will not be playing for France. The former is nursing blisters and the latter is healing a right knee injury. So with the French Team significantly weakened by the absence of two of their top three players, USA’s odds to advance into the final four have seen a marked improvement.
Roddick holds a 1-0 lifetime record over Llodra and a 2-1 lifetime record over Mathieu. Meanwhile, James Blake holds a 2-0 lifetime record over Llodra and a 1-0 lifetime record over Mathieu. The sunny Bryan twins are the top duo in doubles action; they will be hard to beat.
Home court edge and an edge in head-to-head records give the USA Team confidence coming into this tie. Moreover, after bringing the Davis Cup back to American soil last year, ending a 12-year exile, the defending champions will be anxious to avoid succumbing to defeat at this stage.
