College Football Odds Heisman Bubble
by Tim Furious
Ray Rice (RB) – Rutgers Scarlet Knights So what if the Scarlet Knights were obliterated by Pat White and the West Virginia Mountaineers? It wasn’t really Rice’s fault. On 30 carries he rumbled for 142 yards, becoming the first running-back to gain 100+ yards on the Mountaineers. The loss stings Rice’s Heisman chances but he flat-out deserves more love than the voters are giving him right now.
Next game: Rutgers vs. Connecticut (-3)
Darren McFadden (RB) – Arkansas Razorbacks
McFadden will always get some love from the voters because he is widely considered the best player in the game. But strangely enough, he doesn’t play like it. Ranking sixteenth in the nation with 993 yards and only 11 touchdowns drops him in the middle of the pack when compared to other backs. Four touchdowns against a pathetic Florida International University team is not going to convince anyone of anything (except that FIU is terrible).
Next game: South Carolina vs. Arkansas
Andre Woodson (QB) – Kentucky Wildcats
Woodson had an incredibly rough game against Mississippi State. He completed only 57.1 percent of his passes, threw for 230 yards, two touchdowns and three picks. Tebow, in contrast, may have lost but had a much better game statistically. Kentucky has slipped in the standings, and Woodson’s chances of taking home the Heisman have been pulled down with it.
But the betting faithful should not be deterred by this stumbling. Woodson has done enough to buy himself some forgiveness in the eyes of the voters, but he will need Matt Ryan and Dennis Dixon to stumble to catch up. His Heisman hopes are undoubtedly in jeopardy, but there are still reasons to be hopeful.
Next game: BYE WEEK
IN THE MUCK
Chase Daniel (QB) – Missouri Tigers
Daniel keeps putting up solid games, but is simply not shooting the lights out. The offense doesn’t demand him to put the game on his shoulders and that is killing his chances of pulling off the upset for the Heisman. A road game against Colorado is going to be tough for Daniel to win, but it could jump start his Heisman chances.
Next game: Missouri (-4) vs. Colorado
Michael Hart (RB) – Michigan Wolverines
After taking two weeks off with an ankle injury, Hart has allowed Rice, McFadden and Oregon’s John Stewart to gain ground on him. Hart still ranks eighth in the nation with 1,078 yards and has 12 touchdowns. His betting faithful should stick with him because Hart’s career will get him an invite to New York, but only if he gets back on the field immediately.
The tough part for Michigan is that, while they would love to get Hart back on the field, they don’t necessarily need him. The need big wins and their backup backs are doing a fine job without him. Michigan stomped Minnesota in to the ground 34-10 last week and faces in-state rival Michigan State this weekend as a road favorite.
Next game: Michigan (-4.5) vs. Michigan State
