College Football Odds: Big Week 6 Match-Ups
By D. S. Williamson
The LSU Tigers are now the AP poll's number one NCAAF team in the nation. The leap-frogged the USC Trojans after the Trojans had a tough time beating the Washington Huskies and LSU had a ball destroying the Tulane Green Wave.
It doesn't seem to fare to me only because Washington always plays USC tough and Tulane is a walk-over for the LSU Tigers. From a college football betting standpoint, neither the Trojans nor the Tigers covered.
The Trojans shouldn't have a problem covering next week. They are at home and play a terrible Stanford Cardinal team. Even with the BetUS line being somewhere between -36 to –43 points against the spread, USC should have no issues. This is particularly true because they will be trying to jump over the Tigers and take back the mantle of number one team in the nation.
LSU, meanwhile, has a tough road to hoe after their walkover against the Green Wave. Florida was upset on Saturday by the Auburn Tigers. That means Urban Meyer's bunch will be ready for LSU next Saturday. This is going to be a very important game to watch for college football bettors. The trend, that says Florida doesn't cover or beat spreads in an under game, may not hold water in this SEC slugfest. Why? Because depending on what the BetUS total line is at kick-off, this game could go over or under. Florida is an amazing offensive team but a not-so-good defensive team. LSU is an incredible defensive team and an okay offensive team. That means this game could be a shoot-out, or it could be a tight game.
The rest of the top five is all over the place. West Virginia, Florida, and Oklahoma all lost. That means that the top five now looks like this:
1- LSU
2- USC
3- Cal
4- Ohio State
5- Wisconsin
The California Golden Bears got lucky against Oregon. A sure fire Oregon touchdown was called as a touchback after the Oregon wide receiver fumbled the ball out of the end-zone. That turned out to be the last offensive play for the Ducks. California has a bye this week. So, their chances of staying are in the top 5 are pretty much assured.
Especially since the Wisconsin Badgers will have a tough time against the Illionois Fighting Illini this coming Saturday. The BetUS against the spread line should be Wisconsin –2 to –3 come kickoff in this game. I expect Illinois to win as Wisconsin has been escaping, just barely, against okay teams.
Ohio State gets to beat up #23 Purdue on the road this weekend. Does it really matter? Purdue proved how bad their defense could be by giving up 19 points to Notre Dame. In all honesty, Notre Dame's defense is so bad there is no reason for any other Division 1-A team in NCAA football to give up more than ten points. Purdue should get squashed. You won't get any favors, though, as the BetUS line at kickoff figures to Ohio State –10 to –15 against the spread.
Two teams showed that they may be up and comers in the BCS Championship race. The first is South Florida who handled West Virginia. South Florida has now beaten Auburn, who played a spirited game by beating Florida and West Virginia. This team is very good and should coast to an undefeated record as their remaining schedule appears very soft. Watch for South Florida to make a lot of noise.
The other team is Arizona State. The Sun Devils have the perfect balance of run and pass and, when called upon, play terrific defense. Their only flaw is that out of the gate, in the first quarter, they tend to play down to their competition or even get behind by a number of points. Still, they are a very well-coached, tough Pac-10 team who is undefeated and who gets to play USC towards the end of the year. If they stay healthy, and undefeated, they will give the Trojans a run for their money. Beware the Devils from Tempe!
Until next week, good luck!
