NCAA Football Bowl Betting - Outback, Cotton, Gator, Capital One
By D.S. Williamson
It’s January 1st and you’ve got to convince yourself that the night has actually ended. You may wake-up in a stranger’s bed, you may wake up in your car, you may not have even gone to sleep, but, hey, it’s a New Year, right? So, what does that mean?
No, it doesn’t mean that you start your New Years’ Resolution - - heck, no! It means that you got to get sober enough to get into all of the New Year’s Day action! Christmas for a college football bettor doesn’t end on Dec. 25th, friends, it begins on January 1st!
Here are four games that no doubt will start 2008 off right! Who cares if your old lady caught you kissing a different chick? Who cares if you ended up throwing up on your Armani suit after taking it off and trying to take a dip in the YMCA pool? Who cares if you ended mixing Guinness and Pinot Noir or called your boss a fat-ass?
Bah Humbug to all of that! January 1st is the first day of the new betting year! Get in on it, man! Profits are-a-comin’!
Outback Bowl - - Tampa, Florida
Tennessee Volunteers (- 2.5) vs. Wisconsin Badgers (+ 2.5) = No doubt about it, the money has changed hands in this one. If my memory serves me correctly, the Volunteers opened up as 4.5 point favorites. Now, they’re giving up only 2.5 points. Hey, all that means to me is that the SEC gets to thump on an overrated Big-10 team. From what I saw in the SEC Championship Game, the Volunteers had it all their own way before making a few mistakes that let the LSU Tigers back into the game. I’m loving the Vols in this one and I’m loving the fact that at this point they are giving up less than 3 points. The Vols’ D is much superior than Wisconsin’s. Not only that, but the Vols’ offense can score with the Badgers. This could be a good old-fashioned ass-whipping.
Cotton Bowl - - Dallas, TX
Arkansas Razorbacks (+ 3) vs. Missouri Tigers (- 3) = Now, don’t get me wrong, Becky, that Darren McFadden sure is fast. Heck, he’s strong too. He’s good enough to be the next Adrien Petersen in the NFL, but this is still college football betting, right? And, a team like Los Tigres who can throw at will against a soft Arkansas defense means something right? Well, yeah Becky, it does mean something - - it means that the Tigers should have no problem absolutely wholloping the one-player team called the Arkansas Razorbacks. Mizzou should have little trouble covering this spread. Don’t forget that the Tigers just gave their coach a new contract while the Razorbacks coach jumped ship in Atlanta. Boo on that guy!
Gator Bowl - - Jacksonville, FL
Texas Tech Red Raiders (- 6) vs. Virginia Cavaliers (+ 6) = Just when you thought the hangover you’re going to suffer on January 1st would absolutely ruin your mood comes my play of the day! Yeah, baby! Can anybody say - - I love me the money-line! Show me the money-line! Money-line! Money-line! Money-line! This is one of those games where if you really believe the hype surrounding the Texas Tech spread offense you may not look into the stats and realize that the Cavaliers have one of the better defenses in the nation. Heck, the Cavaliers are a pretty good team. I’m feeling a Virginia win in this one - - that right, not just a beat the spread, but an actual win! Take it to the bank, kids!
Capital One Bowl - - Orlando, FL
Florida Gators (- 11.5) vs. Michigan Wolverines (+ 11.5) = First, kudos to the Wolverines for getting Richard Rodriguez to coach them next year. Rodriguez did some amazing things at West Virginia and there’s no doubt in my mind that he will bring Michigan back to the top of the college football Odds world. In my mind he’s actually a better fit than Les Miles. So, good for the maize and blue! But now comes the reality check. Michigan has little chance against the Urban Meyer coached Florida Gators. First, I seriously doubt that Lloyd Carr is going to do anything differently in this game than he has in the past one-hundred or so games he has all ready coached. That means that predictability will be the name of the Wolverines’ game-plan come January 1st. That, of course, means that the Gators absolutely destroy the Wolverines. The maize and blue have no chance in this game. I’m surprised this isn’t a Patriots’ line. Heck, that 11.5 points is a gift!
Until next week, good luck!
