Betting on Horses and Padding Your Bankroll
By Michael Dempsey
National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and he will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers.
The Grade 1 Makers Mark is the highlight of the Keeneland card on Friday. A deep and competitive field of eleven will go a mile on the turf course, unless Mother Nature intervenes.
There is rain in the forecast for the Lexington area.
I am going with a longshot to pull off the upset. Prices may be the theme of the day at both Aqueduct and Keeneland. My Live Longshot list is lengthy, making it a great day to pad our bankroll.
Today's Play of the Day from Keeneland:
KEE Race 9 Makers Mark S. G1 (5:10 et)
#4 Ruff and Ready 10/1
#7 Cosmonaut 6/1
#1 Kip Deville 5/2
#5 Thousand Words 10/1
Analysis: #4 Ruff and Ready comes in here off back to back career tops, last out winning a $75K Fla bred stake. Gets a true class test facing a strong group of milers. The horse that finished second last out was Silver Tree, a multiple graded stakes winner on turf. Handled ground with some give to it last out and we should catch a decent price on this Pletcher runner.
#7 Cosmonaut seldom runs a bad one and is coming off a win at Tampa over soft footing. Two have exited that race to win next out including third place finisher Soldier's Dancer, who won a $85K stake at Tampa in his next outing on 4/5. SIx year old missed winning the G1 Shadwell here last fall in a photo.
Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 6/1 or better.
EX: 4,7 / 1,4,5,7
TRI: 4,7 / 1,4,5,7 / 1,2,4,5,7,9
Aqueduct Late Pick 3
Starting in Race 7: $1: 2,3,4 / 1,5 / 2,4,7,8 = $24
AQU Race 7 Clm $10,000B (3:55 et)
#2 King of Jazz, #3 Holly Time, #4 Dont Knock America
#2 King of Jazz tracked the early pace while wide and faded in the stretch to finish fifth last out, catching an inside speed favoring racing strip. Two back this guy finished a good second at 39/1. Goes form an open claimer in with non-winners of two races or non-winners of a race in six months. Gets in light with capable bug and the price will be generous.
#3 Holly Time stalked the early pace and came up empty in the stretch in a fourth place finish last out versus $16K non winners of a race in six months. Blinkers come off and this guy owns back numbers that are a good fit. Owns a solid pace profile throughout with the edge in early pace numbers.
AQU Race 8 Alw $51,000N1X (4:25 et)
#5 Fee Fi Fo Fum, #1 My Fair El / #1a Starship Cruiser
#5 Fee Fi Fo Fum ships in from Gulfstream where last out the filly was third on the turf at today's condition. Looks primed for a good effort here in her third start of her current form cycle for Jerkens barn. Two back she was second, no match for eight length winner Callie's Joy, who returned to beat Alw-2 optional claimers in her next outing on 3/28. Barn is 42% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from turf to dirt.
AQU Race 9 Md $35,000 (4:55 et)
#2 Scorsica, #4 Battle of Britain, #8 Fast Learner, #7 Depend on Bonnie
#2 Scorsica raced wide last out and was not a threat late, checking in fourth going six furlongs on the main track here. Was claimed out of the race by Arroyo barn that is 15% winners first off the claim. This gal may take to the grass, three of her sibs having won on the weeds, each of the trio owning one turf win.
#4 Battle of Britain returns off nearly a two-month break and drops in for a tag for the firs time here. Her lone turf try came in her debut a non threatening seventh. Last out on the inner she was in the mix early before tiring to finish sixth. That race has produced three next out winners.
Live Longshots:
These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
