Tennis Prediction – Marion Bartoli’s loss in her first match at the Sony Ericsson Championships as the alternate to No.1 Justine Henin is hardly surprising (from what I have seen and heard of Bartoli), because Bartoli found herself in a ridiculous scenario (contesting two out of three round robin matches) and with no legitimate shot at advancing into the semifinals. However, no matter the circumstances, to lose so miserably – 6-0, 6-0 was just a poor display of sportsmanship from the Frenchwoman, who entered the competition onto the second match in Serena Williams’ stead (Williams withdrew with a knee injury following her first match against Anna Chakvetadze). Aside from Bartoli’s unsatisfactory lack of effort, the other disappointing story at the championships has to be the debut of Serbian Jelena Jankovic. After a sensational season, high expectations preceded Jankovic, but after two losses in the round robin stage, Jankovic’s sojourn in Madrid is all but over. Only one match remains, but as the unenthusiastic Bartoli is Jankovic’s up-coming challenger, it is a real shame that the hardworking Jankovic’s season should come to such an ignominious end.
This match may not be the big-ticket seller it could have been, had it been Jelena Jankovic vs. Serena Williams, but if Bartoli demonstrates similar lack of interest she showed against Justine Henin, then betting on this match up should be a no-brainer. Jankovic who has failed to record a victory thus far, should have no resistance in her final match from the dispirited Bartoli and notch her first victory in Madrid. It is a shame that it should end this way.
