NCAAB Wagering - USC Trojans (-8) vs. Memphis Tigers (+8)
by D.S. Williamson
I love Tim Floyd’s attitude. The coach of the USC Trojans is not holding back. After a Sunday loss to the Kansas Jayhawks at home, Floyd sends his fellas all the way to Tennessee to take on the number 2 ranked team in the country, the Memphis Tigers.
The Tigers, led by coach John Calipari, is built on speed. Memphis averages over 85 points a game. They have terrific guard play, great defense, and Calipari is fantastic college basketball coach.
The house that Penny Built (that would be Anfernee Hardaway to you NCAAB bettors who don’t know your early 1990’s college basketball history) is a legitimate Final Four contender.
But, as with most teams that Calipari has coached, they have started the year out by playing against cream-puffs.
The USC Trojans are not cream-puffs. In fact, I think that they are one of the most talented teams in all of college basketball and that by the end of February they will be one of the favorites in the Big Dance.
But, will that prediction help the Trojans in this early season test against the Memphis Tigers? Not really, but this trend might:
The USC Trojans are 25 and 12 against the spread in their last 37 games overall.
The Trojans can play with any team in the country. What beat them in their game versus the Kansas Jayhawks was a lack of experience. Coach Floyd knows that the best way to get the Trojans ready for the Big Dance is to throw them to the wolves against teams like Memphis.
Eventually, USC is going to grow up and take it to one of these so-called superior teams. USC always has a chance to win a game outright. In this game, because it is at a neutral court, the Trojans have an even better chance of winning straight-up.
Luckily, because the spread is so high, we won’t have to worry about them doing that.
The BetUS betting line is USC Trojans +8 against the spread on a neutral court.
I like the Trojans to beat that spread. Eight points is an awful lot to give to a team who should have beaten Kansas on Sunday.
