Horse Betting Action – Busting up the Bayou
By Brian Mulligan
The Fair Grounds is a haven for horse bettors and those that pay attention to where the winners are coming from are certain to be rewarded with dividends as the meet progresses.
One day does not make a season but take a glance at what happened the first Friday of the year at the Louisiana oval.
To say there was a speed bias is an understatement. The first 5 races were won flag fall to that’s all as were the winners of the last 2 races of the day.
In another two races, the winners sat just off the lead basically only about a length and a half off the top.
In the only race where the speed wilted, consider this, the winner was coming late into a pace that was compromised by a longshot prompting the lone speed.
The next day, it was much of the same story with a couple of wrinkles.
Three of the first 4 races were won by nearly wire-to-wire runners but the track changed a bit.
Of the remaining dirt races, 2 were won by dead closers, but one was supposed to win at even money and the other winner benefited by a speed duel where the first three early leaders finished 7th, 8th, and last respectively.
This is just an early trend in how the races have played and it is far from set in stone, but sharp horse bettors have to be aware of this early trend and be ready to adapt to other things as the stand unfolds.
Some claimers to watch for profits also were on view on these two days.
Gamblers have to keep an eye on the hot claim box item Mightytoolight. The gelding brings some back class, was in the hands of two very good horsemen in Cody Autrey and Jimmy Hodge and the runner has a super turn of early foot that will be rewarded on the class jump.
Pat Mouton is loaded for bear this meet and he got the checkbook out for action in the 8th race last Friday. He claimed the 6th finisher of the race and the third finisher and both will be tough right back.
Five in all were claimed from this race and astute horse bettors would be wise to follow all of them.
But let’s examine what Mouton purchased. The 6th finisher, Dragum, was one of the longest shots on the board but she was making up ground at the end. She is relatively fresh, has lacked the killer instinct, but just might move up in leaps and bounds if the blinkers are added.
That will immediately put her mind on business.
The other runner Mouton got was Ohbeegeewhyen. And you heard it here first, this runner will operate like a true mother once she gets used to this surface.
The daughter of Doc’s Leader has been plying her trade in New York and we all know if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.
She brings a super stalk and pounce style, is turf only and will thrive in the Bayou in 2008.
Good luck and here’s hoping you cash with these horses and buy some gumbo.
