NASCAR Betting - Johnson, Gordon Set For Desert Duel

If your NASCAR betting has been focused on any driver other than Jimmie Johnson or Jeff Gordon recently, you’ve probably been walking around with a light wallet. Johnson continued the Hendrick Motorsports’ hot streak with a win last weekend in the Dickies 500, and he’ll be gunning for another win this weekend in the Checker Auto Parts 500.

Johnson has now won three Nextel Cup Series races in a row, and teammate Gordon won the two previous events. That means no other series driver has visited victory lane since September 30, when Greg Biffle came up with the win in Kansas’ LifeLock 400.

Johnson and Gordon are the favorites to get the win at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday. Gordon is actually sitting atop the BetUS NASCAR odds list at +400, while Johnson is just behind him at +450. Gordon will be looking to sweep the two Arizona races this season – he came up with a victory in the Subway Fresh Fit 500 back in April.

Tony Stewart is third on the odds chart for the Checker Auto Parts 500 at +650; Stewart won this event way back in the 1999 season. Denny Hamlin is fourth at +800, and he’s followed by Kyle Busch (+1000), Clint Bowyer (+1200), Kurt Busch (+1200), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (+1500), Martin Truex Jr. (+1500), Matt Kenseth (+1500), Carl Edwards (+1500), and Kevin Harvick (+1500). Harvick won both of the Phoenix events in 2006.

Other drivers and their odds to win this weekend include Jeff Burton (+2000), Ryan Newman (+2000), Kasey Kahne (+3000), Biffle (+3500), Jamie McMurray (+4500), Casey Mears (+4500), and Juan Montoya (+7500). The Field has been listed at +2500.

With only two races left in the season the Chase for the Nextel Cup has basically come down to Johnson vs. Gordon. Johnson holds a 30-point lead in the driver standings heading into Phoenix, and he’s the -225 title favorite. Gordon is behind him at +150 odds. Four other drivers still have mathematical shots at the championship – Bowyer (+5000), Kyle Busch (+25000), Edwards (+25000), and Stewart (+50000).
