With just three races remaining in The Chase for the Cup, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson are virtually in a dead heat for the championship, as the dominating duo invades Texas for Sunday's Dickies 500 and we have the NASCAR betting communities winning selection.

Gordon enters this race atop the standings just 9 points ahead of teammate Johnson. Johnson leads the Nextel Cup series in season wins with eight and Gordon has second most victories with six.

Johnson's most recent win came last week at Atlanta as NASCAR odds listed him the favorite to do at +350. Johnson spent most of the day lurking behind the leaders, finally moving to the front just three laps from the end to find Victory Lane. Gordon finished a respectable seventh.

 

In addition to his six 2007 wins, Gordon has also produced 20 top-5 finishes and 27 top-10's for a stout 7.4 average of finish. Johnson has collected 18 top-5 finishes and 21 top-10's with a 11.5 average of finish on the year.

Johnson and Gordon will again be among oddsmakers top choices to take the checkers at the Texas Motor Speedway, where both drivers have failed to claim past victories.

Gordon has posted five top-5 finishes and six top-10's on the 1.5 miles oval in his career for a 15.8 average of finish. Johnson has earned three top-5 finishes and six top-10's at Texas with a 10.2 average of finish.

Earlier this year, Gordon finished a solid fourth at Texas and Johnson ran a dismal 38th in April. Texas is by far one of Gordon's and Johnson's toughest tracks and that opens the door for other drivers such as Tony Stewart, who has one win, three top-5 finishes and seven top-10's at Texas with a 13.7 average of finish.

Stewart has taken the checkers three times this season and has ten top-5 finishes and 22 top-10's with a 13.0 average of finish.

Qualifying is crucial to bettor's bankrolls in this event. There have been seven races won at Texas from a top-5 starting spot. Nine of the 13 races have been won from a top-10 starting position.
