Bet On Baseball - St. Louis Cardinals (74-84) vs. New York Mets (87-71)

by Robby Maddux

The MLB betting community has watched the New York Mets (-240) drop 9-of-13 games overall and six straight at home, mostly as favorites of -200 or greater, as they attempt to recover lost funds and hold off Philadelphia in the NL East race when they meet St. Louis Cardinals (+200) in a makeup game at Shea this evening.

A 9-6 loss to Washington last night completed a three-game sweep by the lowly Nationals and reduced the Mets' division lead over surging Philadelphia to just one game.

- Mets are 0-5 in their last 5 Thursday games.

- Mets are 2-6 in their last 8 games following a loss.

- Mets are 28-11 in their last 39 vs. National League Central.

- Mets are 4-9 in their last 13 overall.

For those recently investing in New York, your bankroll has dwindled thanks to woeful starting pitching. Mets starters have recorded a 6.29 ERA in the last 13 games, and a sapped bullpen has blown 3-of-5 save opportunities in that span while posting a 6.75 ERA.

The Mets look to turn things around by sending right-hander Pedro Martinez (3-0, 2.57 ERA) to the mound, who will face St. Louis for the first time since Sept. 11, 2005.

Martinez has won his last two decisions over the Cardinals, and is 3-1 with a 2.87 ERA in nine lifetime starts against them.

In his last outing, Martinez gave up four runs and eight hits, walked two and struck out seven in a 9-6 victory over Florida.

- Mets are 3-10 in Martinez's last 13 starts with 5 days of rest.

- Mets are 5-2 in Martinez's last 7 starts vs. National League Central.

St. Louis snapped an 11-game road losing streak with a 7-3 win over Milwaukee yesterday.

- Cardinals are 1-4 in their last 5 Thursday games.

- Cardinals are 1-6 in their last 7 games following a win.

- Cardinals are 3-11 in their last 14 vs. a team with a winning record.

- Cardinals are 6-18 in their last 24 road games.

- Cardinals are 5-16 in their last 21 overall.

The Cardinals will hand the ball to right-hander Joel Pineiro (5-4, 4.53 ERA), who was recently acquired at the July trade deadline from Boston.

Since joining St. Louis, Pineiro has given up 66 hits, including 11 homeruns in 55 2-3 innings.

Pineiro threw 111 pitches in 5 2-3 innings, allowing three runs and eight hits in a 6-3 loss to Houston in his latest appearance. This will be his first trip to the hill against the Mets.

Cardinals are 5-1 in Pineiro's last 6 starts vs. a team with a winning record.

MLB odds display New York (-240) the favorites to win this makeup game with a total of 9 -110.

Mets are 4-9 in their last 13 games as a favorite.

- Mets are 42-16 in their last 58 games as a favorite of -201 or greater.

- Mets are 0-6 in their last 6 home games with the total set at 9.0-10.5.

- Cardinals are 7-19 in their last 26 games as an underdog.

- Cardinals are 1-6 in their last 7 road games with the total set at 9.0-10.5.
