Bet on Baseball: Rockies to get Rocked or Do the Rockin’?
By D.S. Williamson
Out of everything that happened over the weekend, sports-wise, I have to say that the most impressive to me and the one I kept most watch on was the ALCS Championship series between the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox.
As a fan of America’s most cherished sport, I desperately wanted the Red Sox to win their series versus Cleveland. True, the Indians had a great team this year, but a Cleveland Indians versus Colorado Rockies match-up just doesn’t have the same ring as a Boston Red Sox versus Colorado Rockies match-up.
There are slight dynasty implications when it comes to the Red Sox. Not only that, but even though they have Manny “The Mouth”, the Red Sox are still more blue-collar than their blue-blooded arch-rivals, those Damn Yankees. And, the Colorado Rockies? They are blue-collar to the bone. I seriously doubt any Rockies fan has ever tasted Pinot Noir or Cabarnet Sauvignon. It’s all beer with those folks. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with that!
So, who’s going to win this thing, right? Well, based on odds, nobody knows. Sure, the Rockies are a tempting BetUS + 170 to win the series outright, but those MLB odds aren’t nearly high enough for me to recommend a wager.
I’m not a believer in destiny. I am a believer in managers out-managing other managers and hot teams staying hot but that has nothing to do with destiny to me. The truth about the 1990 New York Giants is that Bill Parcells out-coached Marv Levy in that one. What about the 1990 Cincinnati Reds over the Oakland A’s? Well, the A’s always had great hitters but when it came to pitching they just couldn’t match-up against those NL teams in the 1980’s and early 1990’s.
That’s what’s happening here, actually. Even though the Red Sox give the impression that they are just a hard-hitting A.L. team because of that stellar line-up, they are also the better pitching team in this World Series versus the Rockies. They have Curt Schilling, Daisuke Mastuzaka, and Josh Beckett. Who do the Rockies have? Uh…nobody close to those three guys!
Now, the Rockies face a team with the same fire-power that they have, but the team they are facing has better pitching. That puts them in a pretty giant hole. Sure, they will play tough and they are still hot, but so are the Red Sox. The Sox had to beat a superior team, in the Cleveland Indians, then who the Rockies had to beat, and the Sox did it by winning three straight.
In those last three games versus the Indians, the Red Sox scored 7, 11, and 12 runs. While the Rockies had to sit on their laurels and contemplate the amazing feat they accomplished by winning 21 out of their last 22 games, the Red Sox got to get themselves in a groove against Cleveland.
That helps the Red Sox. And, it’s going to help them win this World Series in five games.
The first game of the World Series is on Oct. 24th. The BetUS baseball odds are James Francis for the Rockes at + 170 vs. Josh Beckett for the Red Sox at – 215.
Beckett will dominate the Colorado Rockies and the Boston Red Sox will win this first game by at least four runs setting this baseball championship as a very short World Series.
