MLB Season-Long Pitching Props Picks
By Eric Williams
With the start of spring training just around the corner, it’s never too early to get prepared for the start of the 2008 MLB regular season – and the riches that lie in wait for BetUS.com MLB bettors who are prepared to ride the 162-game long trek of a regular season to the very end.
Fear not MLB Bettors, I’ll be along for the entire ride - and dishing out picks all season that netted bettors a near, 75 percent chance of winning in 2007, as I sailed through what was by far, the greatest MLB wagering season to date in my professional handicapping career.
Personal accolades aside, the start of the 2008 regular season will be under way before the beloved BetUS.com MLB betting community knows it and I’m here to give bettors a bit of sound advice on several of the ingenious season-long props wagers that the clever oddsmakers have cooked up in the BetUS.com Sportsbook.
Here are the odds – and answers to get BetUS.com MLB bettors off to a prosperous 2008 MLB Wagering season.
Most Wins by MLB pitcher
Over 19½ wins -150
Under 19½ wins +110
Regular Season Only
Analysis: The age of multiple20-game winners may be heading toward extinction with all of the specialist relief pitching that has made its way into Major League Baseball in the last two decades and the difficulty in reaching 20 wins has increased significantly.
Boston Red Sox ace Josh Beckett was the only starter in the BetUS.com Sportsbook to reach 20 wins last season though five others were tied with 19 apiece.
No starter reached 20 wins in 2006 although former Minnesota Twins star lefty, Johan Santana and New York Yankees left-hander, Chien-Ming Wang each reached 19 victories.
Four starters surpassed or equaled 20 wins in 2005 and I believe at least one starter will this upcoming season with nearly six players – instead of one – having legitimate shots at the mark last season. Take the Over.
MLB Props Pick: Over 19½ wins by MLB pitcher
Most Losses by MLB pitcher
Over 18½ losses +135
Under 18½ losses -180
Regular Season Only
Analysis: This bet may be the best props pick of the lot as no major league starter has reached 19 losses in the last three seasons, though three players, one in each of the past three seasons, has reached the 18-loss mark. Take that trends to say the same this season and go with the Under.
MLB Props Pick: Under
Most Strike outs by MLB pitcher
Over 236½ strikeouts -125
Under 236½ strikeouts -115
Regular Season Only
Analysis: This props pick may also be a lock as; at least one pitcher has struck out at least 238 batters in each of the past three seasons.
San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy, (240) and Tampa Bay Rays lefty Scott Kazmir, (239), each surpassed the 236.5 strikeouts last season and Santana, (235) came very close after being the only big league pitcher to accomplish the feat in both, 2005 and 2006.
Kazmir is only getting better it seems, no matter how atrocious the Rays are as a team - and a healthy Peavy and Santana will make this props wager and Over.
MLB Props Pick: Over
Most Saves by MLB pitcher
Over 46½ saves -145
Under 46½ saves +105
Regular Season Only
Analysis: This is a very tough call although one pitcher has reached 47 saves in each of the last three seasons. Jose Valverde the Houston Astros’ closer had 47 last season with Los Angeles Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez also recording 47 in 2006 and Washington Nationals closer Chad Cordero picking up 47 in 2005.
I like this props wager to continue the recent trend of going Over 46½ saves.
MLB Props Pick: Over 46½ saves by MLB pitcher
