This week the ATP Tour stops in Barcelona for the Open 2008 Sabadell Atlantico. In attendance is three-time Barcelona champion and 2007 defending champion Rafael Nadal, who arrives in Barcelona after winning the AMS Monte Carlo for a fourth consecutive year on Sunday. Also competing this week is second seed David Ferrer, third seed David Nalbandian and fourth seed James Blake. Tennis Prediction: Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili began the clay court season a fortnight ago at the Estoril Open (reached the second round). He brings a 6-5 mark for the season. Guillermo Coria, who once ranked in the Top 5 (No.3 on 3-May-04), has fallen off the radar in ATP rankings. He arrives in Barcelona with only a 1-2 mark for the season, having only competed in two ATP level draws. At one time Coria was an exceptional clay courter, as such the bookies only slightly disadvantaged the Argentinean on the money line at -190 favorite odds. But as there is little to suggest a renaissance in Coria’s game will occur, this matchup should go the way of the Russian.

Tennis Prediction: Barcelona native, No.54 Marcel Granollers Pujol faces fellow Spaniard, No.87 Albert Montanes in the opening round of the Open Sabadell Atlantico. At -200 favorite odds, there is much to recommend the 22-year-old Barcelonan. Aside from appearing at the Australian Open (lost in the first round), Granollers-Pujol has competed in eight clay court events—three of which were an ATP level draw. In fact, Pujol won the US Men’s Clay Court Championships – his maiden ATP level title – only a fortnight ago, defeating James Blake in the final. Pujol enters the draw in Barcelona with an 8-3 mark for the season.
