AFL Football Betting – Power Poll Week 16
by Mike Rose
1) Georgia Force (9-5)/1-0) (7-7 ATS) (LW: 3) What a difference six weeks makes! The Force were sitting at 3-5 SU and on the outside looking in to the playoffs heading into their Week 10 match-up with the New Orleans VooDoo. Since then, they’ve rattled off six straight victories, and covered the spread in five of those six games making AFL bettors very happy. The 63-34 beatdown they administered in Columbus last weekend just goes to show how tuned in Head Coach Doug Plank’s club is at the moment. They might be a .500 club overall in terms of covering the pointspread (7-7 ATS), but Georgia comes into this Week 16 match-up 5-1 ATS their L/6 overall. It’s crazy to think this Georgia club that completely retooled its roster during the off-season is just one win away from clinching its second straight Southern Division championship, but that’s exactly what this team’s faced with when they host the Chicago Rush in Saturday night’s online gambling affair. A win would also punch their second season tickets for the fourth year in a row.
2) Philadelphia Soul (11-3/1-0) (7-7 ATS) (LW: 4) The “Bye” week allowed the Soul to heal its lingering injuries, but most importantly, recharge their batteries for their huge Eastern Division online betting clash with the Dallas Desperados last Saturday night. Questionable calls aside, the Soul proved to us all that they are the premiere team in the league by handing the Desperados their second home loss to sweep the season series. QB Matt D’Orazio stepped in for the once again injured Tony Graziani, and led his club to victory much like he did in the Souls’ Week 9 match-up with their rivals in Philadelphia. The win snapped their four game losing streak ATS to make them 3-4 ATS their L/7 overall, and they’ll look to even up their home ATS mark this week where they’ve managed a 3-4 ATS mark through their first seven games. That said, this club must continue to press on this week with the pesky Cleveland Gladiators paying them a visit who handed them their first loss of the season backing Week 10.
3) Dallas Desperados (11-3/0-1) (7-7 ATS) (LW: 1) The Desperados failed miserably last week in hopes of evening up their season series with the Philadelphia Soul. Desperado bettors had to be sick when they saw the opening number of (+1) turn into 4-5-point home favorites at the close. Those types of moves most often churn out losing tickets, and that’s exactly what happened in last Saturday night’s AFL online betting affair when Dallas lost outright 71-54. Dallas holds the second-best home record in the AFL at 5-2 and has not lost consecutive games since Weeks 15 and 16 of the 2005 season. The Desperados can become the first team in AFL history to win at least 12 regular-season games in three consecutive seasons with a win over the NY Dragons on Saturday night.
4) Chicago Rush (10-4/0-1) (6-7-1 ATS) (LW: 2) Chicago cruised through its first 11 games of the season to clinch a post-season bid and first round bye, but Head Coach Mike Hohensee’s bunch has struggled in each of the last three weeks with only home field advantage in the American Conference playoffs left to play for. AFL bettors have failed to cash in the last three weeks backing these guys, and last Saturday night’s effort at Cleveland won’t have many looking to back them at red-hot Georgia this Saturday night. With San Jose now just a game back of the Rush for the best record in the American Conference, look for Chicago to pack its “A” game with it on its trip to Georgia as they look to improve upon their 4-3 SU and 2-4-1 ATS marks on the road.
5) San Jose Sabercats (9-5/0-0 BYE) (7-7 ATS) (LW: 5) It’s taken awhile, but the San Jose Sabercats look to be getting back to playing the brand of ball that saw them hoist the ArenaBowl Trophy in New Orleans last season. They improved their positioning last week during its “Bye” when the Rush got trounced by Cleveland, and can possibly take over the #1 seed if they win their last two games of the season and Chicago drops its last two. It’s not as far-fetched as it may seem with the Rush struggling mightily at the moment. They’re 6-2 all-time following bye weeks and can become the third team to clinch three consecutive division titles with a win over Tampa Bay this Saturday night. They’ve been very kind to the betting public cashing six of their L/8 overall spread tickets. At 9-5 SU, the Sabercats can clinch yet another Western Division Championship if the Arizona Rattlers lose to Colorado at home on Monday night.
And the rest….
6) Arizona Rattlers (8-6/1-0) (8-6 ATS (LW: 7)
7) New York Dragons (8-6/1-0) (8-6 ATS) (LW: 8)
8) Tampa Bay Storm (7-7/1-0) (8-4-2 ATS) (LW: 9)
9) Cleveland Gladiators (8-6/1-0) (7-6-1 ATS) (LW: 10)
10) New Orleans Voodoo (8-6/0-1) (8-6 ATS) (LW: 6)
11) Orlando Predators (8-7/0-1) (6-8-1 ATS) (LW: 11)
