AFL Football Betting – Colorado Crush vs. San Jose Sabercats

by Mike Rose

The Divisional Round of the AFL playoffs begins on ESPN Saturday afternoon giving online sportsbettors a chance to wager on this American Conference match-up between the #5 Colorado Crush (7-10, 6-11 ATS) and the #2 San Jose Sabercats (11-5, 7-8-1 ATS). The Crush advanced to the second round of the playoffs by virtue of their 49-44 upset in Utah. They’re now 6-3 SU all-time in the playoffs. As for the Sabercats, they won the Western Division and earned a bye from the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, and take their very impressive 13-8 SU all-time playoff mark into this match-up.

Colorado was touchdown underdogs in their first round playoff bout, but the trip into Utah didn’t faze QB John Dutton and the Crush. Dutton threw for 268 yards and six scores, but Wendell Williams, playing in his first AFL game, stole the show with 190 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns to lead Colorado to victory. Colorado was covering the spread the entire second half, and made AFL bettors that took a stab with them on the money-line were quite happy with the five-point outright victory.

Meanwhile, QB Mark Grieb and the Sabercats sat at home and watched the first round of upsets unfold. Grieb had a 100-touchdown season, and will look to add to a very impressive playoff resume that includes three championship rings. Head Coach Darren Arbet has the most playoff wins of any coach still coaching in the 2008 playoffs (13).

These two teams hooked up earlier this season in the HP Pavilion. The Sabercats were tabbed 10.5-point favorites that day, and covered the spread with ease in their 59-42 win over the Crush. Last year they met in the playoffs, and though San Jose was victorious, the Crush covered the 12-point spread with the eventual ArenaBowl champs winning by a 76-67 final count.

The betting trends offer mixed signals in this game. San Jose is unstoppable at home where they have a 23-5 SU record over the past three seasons, including two wins at home to reach ArenaBowl XXI last season. However, they are just 10-10-1 all-time ATS in playoff games. Colorado is an impressive 8-1 ATS in their nine franchise playoff games, but was just 2-6 ATS in the regular season on the road. The Sabercats hold an 8-1 SU and 7-2 ATS advantage over Colorado in the all-time series.

Oddsmakers tagged the Sabercats lofty 11-point home favorites in this Divisional Playoff showdown, and the game ‘total’ now sits at 112.5.
