2008 Online NBA Draft Betting Future
by Eric Williams
For my beloved BetUS NBA online sports wagering community that hasn’t gotten enough of their NBA basketball betting despite the absolutely thrilling 2007-08 NBA season that just concluded - or the six consecutive winning ATS selections that I made on the NBA Finals in the BetUS Sportsbook - the 2008 NBA Draft brings another opportunity for the online pro basketball bettors to make some more winning NBA wagers in the BetUS Sportsbook.
Despite not having many ‘franchise players’ in the 2008 NBA Draft, online NBA bettors should know that this year’s draft will unequivocally be one of the most evenly leveled fields of young talent the league has seen in quite some time.
With the No.1 overall selection still in doubt, the fact of the matter is that all of the alleged behind-the-scenes rumors regarding trades and transactions surrounding the 2008 NBA Draft could make it one of the most compelling drafts in recent memory.
Of course, the ingenious oddsmakers at BetUS.com have once again come up with several clever 2008 NBA Draft Odds that should leave the NBA online betting community salivating for more NBA wagering action throughout the league’s annual offseason.
With that in mind, here is a look at the 2008 online sports wagering NBA Draft Odds in the BetUS Sportsbook, followed by my analysis and predictions on each wager.
Total Kansas Players Drafted ~ 1st Round
Over 2½ Players -130
Under 2½ Players -110
Analysis: This pick is very simple, depending on how you feel about former Jayhawks’ point guard Mario Chalmers’ chances of going in the first round. I say Chalmers just misses out, going early in the second round while teammates Darrell Arthur and Brandon Rush go in the first.
NBA Free Pick: Under 2½ Kansas Players
Total Memphis Players Drafted ~ 1st Round
Over 2½ Players +130
Under 2½ Players -170
Analysis: Memphis’ two backcourt starters from a year ago, Derrick Rose and Chris Douglas-Roberts are the only two Memphis players going in the first round.
NBA Free Pick: Under 2½ Memphis Players
To Be Selected No 1 Pick
Brook Lopez +4500
Derrick Rose -500
Kevin Love +10000
Michael Beasley +250
OJ Mayo +4500
Field +2500
Analysis: My personal thought process is that there is absolutely no way I pass up on the draft’s most NBA-ready player in former Kansas State phenom Michael Beasley, but something tells me the guard-rich Bulls blow the pick by taking the hometown point guard in Derrick Rose, leaving them in a quandary with current starter Kirk Hinrich and dead-eye shooter Ben Gordon.
NBA Free Pick: Derrick Rose
D Rose 1st NBA Game
Bulls -240
Heat +180
Must Be a NBA Regular Season Game Only Listed Teams Count
Analysis: Rose has practically pleaded with the Bulls to draft the ‘hometown’ success – and they will likely cave in to the pressure despite the fact that Michael Beasley is going to be an almost immediate star in the league and a player who is going to score in the league from day one. Still, take Rose to suit up for the Bulls in 2008-09.
NBA Free Pick: Bulls
Correct Order for 3rd ~ 4th ~ 5th Pick
Bayless ~ Lopez ~ Mayo +600
Bayless ~ Mayo ~ Lopez +600
Lopez ~ Bayless ~ Mayo +300
Lopez ~ Mayo ~ Bayless +500
Mayo ~ Bayless ~ Lopez +750
Mayo ~ Lopez ~ Bayless +600
Field -300
Brook Lopez Jarryd Bayless OJ Mayo All Bets Are Action
Analysis: The Minnesota Timberwolves will almost certainly go after Mayo to run the show for them, while Seattle nabs a player who could turn out to be the best point guard in the draft in Jerrod Bayless and the Memphis Grizzlies grab some much-needed front court size and toughness by grabbing either Lopez or surprising everyone by taking UCLA’s NBA-tough Kevin Love. In the end, I’m going with Mayo, Bayless and Lopez, though I’ll admit that anything could happen and playing the ‘field’ here would also be a very wise wager.
NBA Free Pick: Mayo, Bayless, Lopez or ‘Field’
When will Kevin Love Get Selected
5th Draft Pick +275
6th Draft Pick +450
7th Draft Pick +450
8th Draft Pick +375
9th Draft Pick +400
10th Draft Pick +500
Any Other Pick EV
Analysis: This may be the toughest call on the board as Love could literally go anywhere from No. 4 overall to No. 9 or 10, though I don’t see him falling that far. I think the safe choice here for BetUS online basketball bettors is to play it safe and cover picks 6 through 9 and hope Love goes sixth or seventh and puts a nice piece of change in the pocket at +450 for both selections. If I had to put a definitive number on Love’s selection, I’m going with eighth overall to the Milwaukee Bucks.
NBA Free Pick: Eighth Overall
