The WPT makes a new friend in Cyprus
by BetUS Staff

Ever since the World Poker Tour started several years ago, the number of events in their calendar has steadily grown and grown. Starting in September then there is a brand new venue on that list, the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic. This landmark event takes place between the 12th and the 16th of September at the Merit Cove hotel and Casino.
I fully expect there to be a very strong presence as Cyprus is one of the most beautiful places in Europe to visit. It is also easy to get to for basically anyone in Europe and with cheap flights available at this time of year, I can definitely see the turn out being high. There will be numerous smaller buy-in events and also qualifying satellites into what is the $10,000 main event.
There may be a problem however in so much as the new “English Poker Open” runs from the 15th to the 17th of September at the plush Dusk Till Dawn poker club in Nottingham, England. This is a tournament that is boasting $1 million in prize money for their $5000 main event so this may deter many UK players from making the trip to the Mediterranean.
However there will be many big names going from the USA as well with people like Howard Lederer, Andy Bloch, Mike Matusow and Allen Cunningham already committed to playing. I have heard from numerous sources that the facilities and amenities at the Merit Cove hotel are spectacular.
I already know what the surrounding area is like and I can tell you that it is beautiful, as are most places in that part of the world. So the WPT Cyprus event will be here to stay I am sure and one thing is certain, even the players who bust out of this event are still going to be glad that they made the trip.
