Poker Insider - Moneymaker making noise

Bookmark and Share by Charles Jay

The 2003 main event winner at the WSOP Chris Moneymaker has had his fair share of critics. These are mainly to do with his tournament record since then. But Moneymaker has just gone very deep in the recent World Poker Open $5000 event in Tunica Mississippi. Moneymaker went into the final table as a huge chip leader with over a million in chips.

He then however proceeded to lose a series of races that eroded his stack dramatically. Chad Brown was the next biggest stack on the final table with some 400k in chips. Brown eventually took fourth place and picked up $48,000 in the process of doing so. Moneymaker held around forty percent of the entire chips in play at the start of the final table.

The week had been kind to Moneymaker prior to that as he had already picked up $15,889 for winning the $500 Pot Limit Omaha event. This may seem like a small tournament for such a higher profile player and there was only $44,000 in total prize money. But a win is a win as they say and any win, even one with a field of only 91 players can do wonders for a players confidence. It is therefore no surprise to see Moneymaker move on from this and go very deep in the main event.

Moneymaker eventually busted out in third place and took home $60,110 for his troubles. The final hand saw Moneymaker get all-in with top pair against the flush draw of his opponent and the flush came in on the river……exit Moneymaker. When play got down to heads up, we had a battle of an unknown against a strong internet pro.

Jeremy Gaubert plays professionally online and is nicknamed “thechemist83”. His opponent was Steve Hamontree who owns a business in Chattanooga Tennessee. The final hand of the tournament saw Gaubert get dealt pocket aces against the flopped top pair of tens for Hamontree. The aces held on and Gaubert picked up a nice $192,953 and also a $10k seat into the WPT Southern Poker Championship event in Biloxi.

This result now takes Gaubert’s total tournament winnings both live and online to $1.3 million dollars and definitely marks him as one to watch for the future.
