In poker there are many different ways to play the game, in fact there are probably more ways to play poker than there are actual people who play. The almost endless combination of poker books, coaching sites and all of the other poker related sources dictate that each individual will be at a slightly different level of poker knowledge and sophistication.

One of the lessons that I learned in my career was to identify that quite often poker books or any other kind of tutorial material for that matter can seriously handicap you more than it can help. This may not be overly apparent to many but it is true.

One of the biggest mistakes I made personally was in how I failed to appreciate how certain types of poker failed to fit in with my personality. Because at the end of the day we are all different personalities and various types of poker will impact on those personalities more than others

So I would strongly advise any poker player to take a good long hard look at themselves and really try to find out how they think and of what types of poker they think blends best with their own individual personality. This is an absolutely crucial step to take as many poker players play variations that are not conducive to their own personality

I believe that the way around this problem is to first locate which types of poker you actually enjoy playing. If you enjoy doing anything in life then you are going to want to do more of it and that means that you will also enjoy the educational process of making yourself a better poker player.

No limit for instance does not suit an awful lot of people. It is a type of poker in which a player can have a very high strike rate of pots won and still be a losing player. It is often the players personality that is the underlying reason for why they are losing money. Maybe indiscipline or whatever is the cause but whatever it is then it probably to do with the players personality if you look deep enough.

To succeed in anything in life you must enjoy what you are doing, otherwise you will never push through the boundary of working on your game for long periods of time. Finding poker variations that suit your personality will be one of the biggest leaps forward that you will ever take in your poker career. If you can find contentment in poker then you will be well on your way towards making money playing online. This is not just my opinion, this is a fact based on my experiences and talking to countless other online poker players down the years.
