It is no secret that Alexander Ovechkin is a superstar in this league. In fact, he may very well be one of the top-5 talents in the league. He scored 92 points last season and found a running mate in Alexander Semin. Now, with Nicklas Backstrom (fourth overall pick in 2006) in the mix, there is reason to get exited about this Capitals squad. Watch them through the opening of the season to see if it's worth placing your NHL Betting cash on them.

The Caps also brought in Michael Nylander and Viktor Kozlov, along with defenseman Tom Poti. Poti is an unheralded puck mover with a big body. He is excellent on the power play and should be a great point man for the Caps. Nylander, meanwhile, enjoyed his finest season last year with 83 points and should enjoy the same type of success as long as he is paired with Ovechkin.

The Olaf Kolzig experiment has to come to an end. His goals against average hit the 3.00 mark last year and was ranked 33rd in the league – that was good enough for the worst starting goaltender in the league. Kolzig simply isn’t the man to get the job done between the pipes and his continued short comings will keep the Capitals from taking the leap that Ovechkin will eventually propel them to.

They are putting the right pieces in place, and still working out their finances, which are as much of a disaster as the on-ice results of this team. Hold your breath for good things to come in the future, but this season is another in which the Caps will only have Ovechkin’s amazing highlight reels to smile about. They are simply not ready to make the leap yet.
