Phoenix has long been the Island of Misfit Toys for the NHL betting world. They sign aging stars who are well past their prime and have spent years torturing their fans. This year, GM Don Maloney has been brought in to give new hope to the aptly named Coyotes (consider the rest of the league the Road Runner). Maloney helped build the New York Rangers that are rocking the league today. The rebuilding process has restarted in Phoenix, which means hope for the long-term future and losses in the imminent future of NHL betting.

The Coyotes started by getting rid of a roster which simply had too many over-the-hill veterans. They will enter the 2007-08 by throwing their young rookies to the wolves. Daniel Carcillo and Bill Thomas will hit the learning curve hard, and will need to adapt to the speed and pace of the NHL game in a hurry. The power-play ranked 22nd in the league last year and the offense was a brutal 24th in the NHL. Don’t expect a massive leap as these young guns learn the ropes.

Also maligning the Coyotes is the goaltending. Or, rather, the lack thereof. The depth chart of goalies consists of Alex Auld, Mikael Tellqvist, David LeNeveu and David Aebischer. And you wonder why we refer to them as the Island of Misfit Toys.

They have the Great One behind the bench, but this team is horrifically bad. They are headed in the right direction, but when you are easily the worst team in the league, there really is no other direction you could be heading.
