The Dallas Stars faced their doppelganger in Vancouver during the 2007 Playoffs. The Stars can’t score, have amazing goal tending and solid defense. That’s the Stars in a nutshell, and that’s good enough for playoffs in the Western Conference, but it’s difficult to shoot these Stars into the Stanley Cup picture because they are horrifically inconsistent at scoring.

To make matters worse for the NHL bettor, they barely ever beat the puck-line because they squat on tight leads. Marty Turco ended last season as the fourth best goaltender with a 48-23-7 record and a 2.23 goals against average. Those are solid numbers from a goalie that the experts had given up on a few years ago.

But the team in front of him is lousy. They ranked 21st in offense, tied with Vancouver, and rifled off the 23rd fewest shots per game in the league. Mike Modano used to be the most feared puck handler in the NHL, but that was years ago. He’s lost a step but was so far ahead of the curve that he’s merely a much-better-then-average player now. The problem is that nobody in Dallas is emerging as the heir apparent.

The Stars have no qualms on defense and will only get better with AHL stud Niklas Grossman making the jump to the NHL this year. Turco will anchor the team from drifting out of the playoff picture. They’re an impossible team to figure out since they win so many games and score very few points overall. Once this is for certain – there is no way in hell the Stars are winning the Cup with this offense.
