Frankly, if the Bruins were any good, life wouldn’t be fair in the world of sports. With the Patriots, Celtics and Red Sox all playoff bound, the Bruins are bottom feeders in the NHL. They allowed the most short-handed goals last year with 18. That’s just an awful statistic to be the worst in.

Marc Savard is as good as advertised, but he has very little support. Glen Murray, who was virtually unstoppable when Joe Thornton was in town, was riddled with injuries last season and only managed 59 games last year. Simply put, their offense lacks any drive and couldn’t fore-check a scarecrow on skates if it meant doing so would win their game. The loss of Joe Thornton is still rippling through this down-trodden team.

There is little to no point in explaining how bad this crop of defenseman is. They stink. And the goaltending will suffer because of it. Manny Fernandez is shouldering the all-too-high expectations of hockey-crazy Boston. He comes in with a fine resume, but nobody is going to be protecting him, meaning he is in for a long, painful season.

The Bruins will continue to crank up the suck in the NHL, and are maybe two or three seasons away from turning around their team and the NHL odds that surround them. They will be the laughing stock of the league, but with the rest of Boston’s sports scene vibrant with championship life, the city of Boston probably won’t even notice.
