Utah State Aggies - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
In a case of literary justice, Utah State comes last alphabetically in the WAC and also last statistically. The WAC bottom feeders won a single game in 2006 and if things are going to improve, it will be this year with seven starters returning on offense and all eleven returning on defense. Utah State does, however, have to replace quarterback Riley Nelson and top rusher Marcus Cross, who scrambled for 650 yards last season.
Darrell Dickey, former North Texas head coach, takes over as offensive coordinator and with the Aggies’ top three receiving threats back should help tremendously. Kevin Robinson (582 yards), Otis Nelson and tight end Rob Meyer will look to stretch the field for Leon Jackson II, who started each of the last two seasons but lost his job near the end of 2006. The rushing attack took a big hit when top tailback Marcus Cross transferred, and now the Aggies will turn to Aaron Lesure, a wide receiver last season who looks to become Utah State’s first 1,000-yard rusher since 2001. Freshman Curtis Marsh will also look to make an immediate impact, having enrolled early to get time during spring ball. Utah State scored just 10.8 PPG, which ranked third last in the nation, and only gained 263.8 YPG, a number that should improve dramatically with Dickey’s hiring.
That said, an improved offense is not the cure-all for the Aggies. The defense gave up 38.5 PPG and 436 yards per contest. Every starter is back, including top tackler Antonio Taylor and strong safety Caleb Taylor. Linebackers Devon Hall and Paul Igboell also look to help the cause and get Utah State out of the league basement and climbing back up the stairs to respectability, but it will require marked improvements on both sides of the ball to make Utah State competitive this fall.
