New Mexico State Aggies - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

The Aggies had the explosive offense to compete in the speedy WAC, but it didn’t translate to many wins, finishing just 3-8 and near the bottom (2-6) in league play. Nine starters are back on both offense and defense, but the scoring unit will be getting most of the ink coming into the season.

New Mexico State ranked 15th last season with over 31 PPG, putting up 400 yards through the air and 492.5 in total yardage. Those numbers were generated primarily by stud junior quarterback Chase Holbrook. Last season, he threw for 4,619 yards - an NCAA record for a sophomore. He connected for 34 touchdowns and his main target, Chris Williams (1,425 yards), is back, as is top rusher Jeremiah Williams (426 yards). Also returning is A.J. Harris and Derek Bubois to bolster the corps, along with tight end Nick Cleaver. More is expected in Holbrook’s third year as he guides this explosive unit. Similar to Hawaii, the Aggies primarily focus on the aerial game, as they will toss as many as 50-60 times a game.

NM State needs to make stops on defense and that’s where the big challenge will be. The Aggies gave up 31 PPG and ranked 99th in the country with just under 390 yards surrendered. The team had just 12 sacks as a group, and must make up for the loss of their leading tackler, Tim McManigal, who had 99 stops. Gone as well is top corner Courtney Bryan (4 interceptions) and Nathan Nuttall (3 sacks). While nine defensive starters return, led by linebackers Dante Floyd, Sam King and Jamar Cotton, they produced just 14 takeaways last year, a number that must improve if the Aggies hope to improve their record.
