Idaho Vandals - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

Maybe it will be third-time lucky for the Vandals.

Idaho introduces their third head coach in three years in Robb Akey, who comes over from Washington State to find 15 returning players from last year’s squad. Akey, formally the defensive coordinator at Wazzou, and new offensive coordinator Steve Axman are looking to open the field up on offense with more one-back sets, using four or five receivers. Leaders in the passing game are gone, notably quarterback Steven Wichman, wideout Marlon Haynes and tight end Luke Smith-Anderson. Considering this unit scored just under 17 PPG (103rd nationally) last season, there might not be too much to improve upon with new starters in those skill positions. Idaho was also near the bottom in total yards in 94th with 322.4. Brian Nooy will look to take the helm as the new signal caller, but his lack of experience is a definite issue with Wichman gone. The Vandals will undoubtedly rely on their trio of running backs: Jayson Byrd, Brian Flowers and Rolly Lumbala should earn the lion’s share of duty and become the conference’s best group. Indeed, they may have no choice if the QB can’t get it done through the air.

The Vandal defense, which ranked 115th with 34.8 PPG allowed, also surrendered nearly 400 YPG. However, with nine starters returning, there is hope for a better outcome in 2007. Leading tackler David Vobora (134) returns with top sack-threat Jo Artis Ratti (3) and one of the nation’s best in interceptions, cornerback Stanley Franks, who hawked an impressive nine balls. Idaho could eat the dust of the high-scoring teams in the WAC in 2007 unless that defense shores up and the offense is better than the sputtering version from last season.
