A 4-8 record might be acceptable for some programs in the WAC, but not Fresno State. An underachieving 4-8 has the Bulldogs and Pat Hill hungry to make changes in 2007 and improve upon that mediocre 4-4 conference mark.
Quarterback Tom Brandstater no longer has the luxury of relying on tailback Dwayne Wright. Fresno State’s workhorse rushed for 1,462 yards and will be sorely missed. Lost too are wideouts and merchants Joe Fernandez and Paul Williams. Depth, however, will carry over and Chastin West, the team’s leading receiver last year, will look for a big year alongside fellow runners Marlon Moore and tight end Bear Pascoe. In all, seven starters are back on offense, including four from the offensive line. This big group up front was a bright spot, allowing just 12 total sacks in all of 2006.
It was not a pretty situation on the other side of the ball. The Bulldog ‘D’ allowed 362.9 YPG, which ranked 86th overall, and gave up 28.2 PPG. Those numbers don’t appear to be improving any time soon with five key defenders out the door. Louis Leonard, Dwayne Andrews and Alan Goodwin are gone from the front seven, while the secondary loses top corner Marcus McCauley and strong safety Josh Sherley. Andrews was the team’s leader in tackles with 88. Defensive tackles Jason Shirley and Charles Tolbert will fill up the middle, while linebacker Ahijah Lane will do some good things to replace Andrews this fall.
Finishing in the middle of the pack last season, there is certainly room for improvement. No doubt the top three spots are unreachable for this team, but anything else is fair game.
