Boise State Broncos - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
All Chris Peterson did in his first season as Broncos head coach was rampage undefeated through the WAC (8-0), finish with a perfect 13-0 record - and who can ever forget that that Fiesta Bowl shocker over Oklahoma?
Much is gone from last year’s unbeaten team, including Boise’s heart-and-soul quarterback Jared Zabranksy, who was picked up by the Houston Texans. The Broncos also lost their top three wideouts: Jerard Rabb, Drisan James and Legedu Naanee. James led the group with 650 receiving yards, but the good news is top tailback and the nation’s leading touchdown-scorer Ian Johnson returns as the offense’s main focal point. Last season, he set a school record with 1,714 yards, coming through with 25 touchdowns as well. Only a junior, Johnson is just one of five returning starters on the offensive side of the ball. The other two notables are receiver Vinny Perretta and offensive tackle Ryan Clady. The man who will try and fill the large shoes of Zabransky is the unknown Taylor Tharp, a junior from Colorado. Junior Bush Hamdan or senior Nick Lomax will also get consideration if Tharp falters.
If the worries on offense were not enough to dampen enthusiasm in Boise, the Broncos must also deal with losing their top linebacker Korey Hall. Also departing with the senior is top safety Gerald Alexander. The Bronco defense was strong one season ago, ranking 16th in the country, with only 15.6 points allowed per game, while allowing 274 total yards, good for 14th nationally. Notably, the offense was one of the best as well, averaging 40 PPG pace and nearly 650 total yards. Those numbers will inevitably drop with their losses on both side of the ball, but with Johnson leading the cause, Boise State will still be a force throughout the WAC.
