Temple Owls - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

The Owls moved to the MAC after a string of disappointing seasons as an Independent, culminating in their 2006 campaign at 1-11. That single victory halted a 20-game losing streak for the Owls, so 2006 could be considered a success.  Al Golden returns 16 starters on both sides of the ball, including nine on offense.  But that may not be such a blessing, as the Owls were dead last in the NCAA in total offense, 118th in rushing offense and 116th in scoring offense.

Quarterback Adam DiMichele threw more picks than scores and faces stiff competition from Vaughn Charlton for the starter’s role. Either will need protection from a line that returns three starters, but which was third worst in the nation in sacks allowed.  Leading running back Tim Brown is gone, and his graduation is a blow to the backfield.  This means Golden may air it out a little with receivers Bruce Francis (32 receptions, 484 yards, 4 TD) and Travis Shelton (20 receptions, 344 yards, 3 TD).  The defense brings back seven starters from 2006, but this unit was even worse than the offense last season.  The Owls were 117th in total defense, 118th in scoring defense, and 119th in rushing defense.  2007 does not look to be much better, although defensive linemen Brian Sanford and Terrance Knighton are back to add some experience.  The linebacking corps was hurt by the loss of Ryan Gore, so Golden needs to find a replacement for the middle over the summer.

The Owls open the season at home against Navy, then travel to Army in late September.  Back-to-back home games against Penn State and Kent State could get ugly for the Owls as well.  The rebuilding at Temple will continue for 2007, and beyond.  The mission for Golden this season is mitigating the damage.
