Troy Trojans - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting

JUCO-transfer quarterback Omar Haugabook gave the Trojans reason to get excited last year. This year, as a senior, he’ll capture more attention under center. He wowed observers last December in winning the New Orleans Bowl over Rice, capping off an 8-5 overall record that saw them go 6-1 in conference play. Haugabook threw for 2,401 yards and 21 touchdowns last season, while top tailback Kenny Cattous (810 yards) re-joins him in the backfield. More than just a straight thrower, Haugabook showed his ability to scramble outside the pocket and pick up key yardage with his legs. Last season, he tallied 309 rushing yards and five scores to complement Cattous’ skills with the ball. Also returning is top wideout Gary Banks and his 603 receiving yards, giving the Trojans a valuable 1-2-3 punch.

Fourteen starters in all are back, which sparks promise for yet another Sun Belt crown. Troy finished 2006 ranked 85th in overall offense, averaging 315.2 YPG and scoring just over 21. The defensive unit gave up 344.4 YPG and 22.7 PPG, good enough for 70th in the country. Eight starters are back on that side of the ball, including defensive end Kenny Mainor (6.5 sacks) and linebacker Boris Lee. Lee was third on the team in tackles with 62 and earned valuable playing experience in his first year. It should carry over to this fall. The secondary should also be strong, led by cornerbacks Leodis McKelvin and Elbert Mack. Strong safety Brannon Condren, the team’s leading tackler last season (98), will be missed as a last resort in the secondary.

Last season, Troy played well in the non-conference against the likes of Florida State and Georgia Tech. This year they get to run the SEC gauntlet, facing the likes of ArkansasGeorgia and defending national champion Florida.
