College Football Betting - North Texas Mean Green
North Texas Mean Green - NCAA Football Odds, Lines & Betting
Only several years ago the Mean Green program was the clear-cut power of the conference. However, a couple of mundane seasons culminated in a 3-9 season last year, including 2-5 in conference competition.
The most important returning player is running back Jamario Thomas, who looks to improve on last season’s pedestrian statistics when some observers wondered aloud if he was fully healthy. Thomas led the nation as a freshman in 2004 with 1,801 yards, scoring 17 times. Since then his numbers have dropped off remarkably, failing to reach his first-year numbers in his sophomore and junior years combined. Although Thomas tallied just 668 yards along the ground in 2006, that actually indicates how inconsistent their quarterback play was, and the lack of respect opponents gave to the deep ball threat from North Texas, as pivots Daniel Meager, Woody Wilson and Matt Phillips all struggled. The junior Meager enters this season as the top guy after a much-improved spring. His top receiving threat from a season ago, Johnny Quinn, is gone and his presence will be missed. Quinn caught 40 more balls than any one wideout on the team in 2006. The Mean Green ranked near the bottom in the nation on offense, sitting 117th at the end of the season with just 232 yards gained per game and a dismal 12.8 points scored. They averaged 115 yards though the air, only ahead of option teams Air Force and Navy.
The defense was the brighter side in 2006, ranking 65th overall in the country and giving up 25 PPG. Ten starters are back and that suggests these numbers will improve, especially with leading tackler Aaron Weathers (78) and top sack man Jeremiah Chapman (4.5) leading the charge.
